Mike Jarvis is about to begin a four-year contract as men's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University. FAU will introduce Jarvis, 63, as its coach Tuesday at the Boca Raton campus, a high-level source close to the FAU athletic program told The Miami Herald on Sunday evening. Jarvis' hiring is pending formal approval by the FAU Board of Trustees. That approval is expected to pass. Jarvis has not coached since he was fired from St. John's in December 2003. He lives in Boca Raton, about three miles from the FAU campus. FAU officials believe his hiring will bring a new fan base to the school and increase ticket sales.

I guess failure does have its rewards.

He basically ruined St Johns.
He had a few years off to enjoy his $, now he will coach at FAU- & he will make good retirement $.

He is a nice guy- but bad recruiter & average coach - good luck FAU- hope you enjoy remaining in obscurity

He didn't ruin it at St. John's. St. John's never supported him jgb. I am an alumnus and on campus during his years there, and that administration was too busy trying to expand it's campus and change it's image as a commuter school, then trying to support him. He took the fall for a bunch of idiot players and I am happy as all hell that he is finally getting a second chance at FAU.

This guy was one of the only coaches to keep local talent in NYC. He will be just fine.

Idiot players he recruited, lacking talent
- I grew up a St Johns fan & want them to get better, but he really hurt the school. He recruited terribly & they've never been able to recover. they lose players to pitt....pitt?

I agree the administration wasn't too helpful, but what do they have to do with recruiting? Trying to expand is a good thing- they care about the overall picture- the coach (and AD) are resonsible for the program

Omar Cook and Erick Barkley are both better players then Norm Roberts brought in. He recruited better then Norm did, although that isn't really saying much,

jgb: If you are interested I am the administrator of the St. John's Fan Group here. I need passionate St. John's fans to join because as I am sure you know there aren't many of us here.

wow...A Former st John's coach is about to coach the school i am about to attend in my first year...let's see how he does...we dont really get any recognition from da National standpoint when it comes to basketball

excellent pick up for FAU. he's a quality coach that has proven he can win with inferior talent. he's done it a GW and SJU. let's put things in perspective here.....he's not coaching in the ACC or big east.....its the freakin sun belt conf.

I don't know what kind of coach he is. But i met him at a coaching clinic and he is an outstanding individual. I'm happy for him.

May 27, 2008  03:24 PM ET

He talks a good BS ...he runied St John as someone mentioned before he doesnt know how to recruit and kids dispised him!

May 27, 2008  04:07 PM ET

I really don't understand the ruin St. John's thing. St. John's was going down since Fran Fraschilla.

If any thing I would say that Norm Roberts is bringing the place down. He cannot recruit and he is supposed to be a top notch recruiter.

If I had the time I would blog my point to prove the haters wrong. Too bad, I don't have the time today. Sometime this week I will, I need to do some research.

He just reached a higher level of coaching and competition than he could handle. The Peter Principal. He is not a bad man, just not the man for a place like SJU. It happens all the time. He was over matched in the Big East.
