Bulls center Joakim Noah was arrested in Gainesville, Fla., early Sunday on allegations of possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and an open-container violation, police said. Summer Hallett, public information officer for the Gainesville Police Department, confirmed that Gainesville police stopped Noah, 23, about 1:50 a.m. Sunday for carrying a clear plastic cup with an "iced, amber-colored beverage" inside...Hallett said, officers discovered a cannabis cigarette inside a cigarette package that Noah had in his pants pocket. Noah was issued a notice to appear in court for the two misdemeanors.

What do you call it when a roach ash burns your shirt? A pot hole!

May 27, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Looks like Josh Howard wasn't lying.

Im sure this makes David Stern happy..

It was only a joint people, lets not get too carried away with it. It's not like he was selling pounds of dope on the corner. But once again the police are wasting tax payers money and their time to arrest a professional athlete in the OFF-SEASON!! Rather than going after the people selling tonnes of cocaine and heroin.

Cut your hair, you look like an idiot.

big deal. ya its illegal, but give me a break. like thunder said: it was only a joint. i find it odd that its perfectly ok to go out to some club and consume copious amounts of beer, champagne and vodka or whatever and then run around yelling like an idiot or getting into fights, but possessing or smoking a dried up plant rolled up in some paper and we're takin you to jail! while i suppose he should be trying to set a better example and this doesn't look good for the league or the bulls, i think its time that these ridiculous marijuana laws are revisited. again.

i would much rather have noah or anyone smoking some pot than being a drunk. it's a shame that he's actually going to get punished for this.

May 27, 2008  09:09 AM ET

It says one joint but it also says 20 grams, so either that was one hell of joint, or where was the rest of it?

May 27, 2008  09:12 AM ET

You guys... All of you ppl who think that it is okay for ppl to be out burnin' one need to get a life. Alcohol = Legal = Acceptable. Marijuana = Illegal = Unacceptable. It is really that simple. You ppl who argue, "I'd rather have him high than drunk, it is hard to believe taht someone can go out and drink at a bar blah, blah, blah, blah...", are missing the point. No one is saying that anyone should go out to a bar and get sloshed. Remember, DWI = Illegal = Unacceptable.

But hey, who am I to tell someone what they can or can't do, right? Go ahead, legalize pot. While we're at it, that LSD stuff isn't hurting anyone but the user, let's legalize that too! Ooooh! Oooh! What about crack!!!

The "Legalize It" campaign should be burned by the same losers who smoke the junk.

the point i was making is that its ridiculous for it to be illegal. yes it is currently illegal in the united states, but just because something is legal or illegal doesn't make it right or wrong.

driving above the speed limit is also illegal, and tell me what is more dangerous or kills more people, speeding or smoking pot?

the charge was for possession of less than 20 grams.. not saying he had 20 grams. its like a charge for possession of stolen property for under $5K ... doesn't mean you had $5K worth

Nevermind that weed smoke or any smoke in your lungs is probably not improving your strength & conditioning. He's a professional athlete, a supposed "elite" athlete and he's smoking?? Dude needs to figure out his priorities. Bulls made a huge mistake on this guy.... talent wise and character wise.

DUM-A$$!!

May 27, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Plain and simple, the only reason that pot isn't legal is the fact that government has no way to control and tax it. If they could they would.

May 27, 2008  10:11 AM ET

This is old news

May 27, 2008  10:23 AM ET

ok, pot is illegal and he should face the consequences for not obeying the law, all citizens should respect the law and be punished when they don't. fair enough. my point above was about how much different and harsher this instance will be treated compared to other illegal activites by professional athletes.

the following two events were illegal and both involve professional athletes.
1) joakim noah drinking in public and possessing a marijuana cigarette
2) lebron james driving 101mph in a 65mph zone

- which situation is worse and why?
- which situation is going to cause the individual to be treated harsher and receive more negative media attention?
- which situation will recieve a more severe punishment (by the law and the league)?

i think you know the answers to these questions and that is my long-winded point. to me, driving 35mph above the speed limit is more dangersous and reckless yet no one really thought much of lebron speeding, but noah having a joint on him, oh no!! what a disgrace! lol .. i just think the priorities are a little messed up here.

(whew, now i'm out of breath)

Hoggaphobia, the simple fact that you hold pot and LSD in the same light shows me that probably still live with your parents and probably don't have any friends other than your bible buddies. Pot in no means is good for you, but to lump it into a category with LSD, herion, and crack is completly idiotic. It may zap your ambition some and make you hungry, but as Bob Saget says, nobody sucked any dick for some marijuana.

Wow, a Dino Radja reference......that may be the first one in the history of FN

I just hope the cigarette box did not contain any cigarettes. Smoke all the pot you want, leave the cancer sticks alone.
