Leafs denied access to Nieuwendyk
The Maple Leafs have been shut down by the Panthers in their attempt to talk to Joe Nieuwendyk about a management job, TSN reported Sunday on its website. Citing sources, TSN reported that Maple Leafs interim general manager Cliff Fletcher asked the Florida Panthers for permission to speak with Nieuwendyk last week and the Panthers declined. Toronto must wait until July 1, when Nieuwendyk's contract with the Panthers expires, before they can officially approach him. Toronto is interested in bringing the former Maple Leaf forward on board to work alongside Fletcher and potentially ex-Canucks GM Dave Nonis.

It's an act of mercy! The Panthers are protecting him and putting Nieuwendyk's best interests first. Not that the Panthers organization is much better than the Leafs but at least they're looking out for him!

This is just sore politics. The Panthers are still miffed at the Chad Kilger mess, and are attempting to get back at the Leafs. It is pointless, as Nieuwendyk is free after July 1. He will likely join his old pal Cliffy in Toronto for some serious apprenticeship. I can see him making a great GM one day, he was always a heady player who was respected by teammates and management.

joec, couldn't have said it better my self. It just baffles me that they would deny permission to a guy who has resigned and has stated he has no interest in going back to Florida. But, then again its Jacques Martin and he is just being petty becaus eof the Kilger situation and going back to his days with the Sens!
