Kidd 'uncomfortable' after Mavs deal

As he reflects on his relationship with Avery Johnson and looks ahead to life with new coach Rick Carlisle, Kidd acknowledges his two-and-a-half months with the Mavericks weren't seamless. "It was uncomfortable," Kidd said. "I was disappointed that I couldn't help the team win more games. I felt like I let my teammates down." Speculate all you want about the team's need to trade Josh Howard or shake up the roster. A key to next season will be Rick Carlisle's ability to devise a system that maximizes the skills of his 35-year-old point guard.

The trade for Kidd was a bonehead move from the beginning. It will be another mistake to think that he is going to get better at this stage of his career. This team isn't going anywhere.

May 27, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Tell me why we traded again for a 35 year old point guard when we could have used that 20 million to get Bibby And Artest.

May 27, 2008  10:14 AM ET

The problem with most superstars is that they can never accept the fact that they've aged, and can no longer do the things they once could. I called this one months ago.

May 27, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Dallas is going somewhere Hllywd to the bottom of the standings

May 27, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Too bad the West is full of powerhouse teams or else they could make a playoff spot. Next year they will have to worry about GSW and Portland.

May 27, 2008  10:32 AM ET

The trade for Kidd was just terrible. Dallas really screwed the pooch on that one.

May 27, 2008  10:40 AM ET

I a not a BKB fan but when I read about the trade I thought the MAVS made a big mistake -- letting a Harris go, I dont know who pulled that trade but whoever did needs to be reprimended! This dude is DONE ! He needs to start his gambling tour to Vegas just like any other OLD and has been NBA player has done recently...

May 27, 2008  10:49 AM ET

You FELT like you let your team down because you DID.

The problem is that the Mav's have the worlds biggest nerd as an owner who is obviously trying to compensate for his nerdiness with pretending to know something about basketball, but obviously knows nothing of what it takes to actually win a championship in this league.

May 27, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Jason Kidd is a coach killer. Look at all the places he has been and gotten coaches fired!!!! He got Byron fired, tried to get lawerence fired, got Avery fired...do I need to go on? Stick a fork in the Mavs they are DONE. Tear the roster up and start over...get rid Dirk and anyone else that's not helpful

May 27, 2008  11:15 AM ET

You did let your team down, Kidd. You let the Nets down by being a whiny malcontent and you let the Mavericks down by being too old and too slow to keep up with the young point guards who've come into the league and made you irrelevant.

The Mavericks are finished. It's a joy to watch Mark Cuban grinding his teeth.

May 27, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Why is this a surprise? The Mavs are done - great work by Cuban trading away a wealth of young talent for a past-prime player.

May 27, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Who's Jason Kidd?

May 27, 2008  11:44 AM ET

They should just all mellow out and go to J. Howards house for a party!!

May 27, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Jason was heard to comment - ''who am I KIDDING I'm washed up" !!!

May 27, 2008  11:57 AM ET

cmon kidd its not your fault you got a 7 footer that doens't play defense and thinks he's a 2 guard and another teammate that can't wait for the season to be over so that he can blaze it on up!!

May 27, 2008  12:07 PM ET

I agree with everyone saying that the Kidd trade was a bad move. Everyone knew this but the person who made the trade.
That being said I can't agree totally with the rest of the remarks. Say what you want about Kidd being a coach killer and letting his team down but I believe MUCH of his failure revolves around 2 things.
1. As much as I like Avery, and that is a LOT, I have to again say that he used Kidd the worst possible way he could. Kidd's passing skills are still awesome while his shooting is horrible. Where was Kidd lined up in the last two post season games? A SHOOTING GUARD position! What the heck? I'm sorry but you sit the guy before you put him in as a shooting guard. Jet was playing point and that is what Avery was trying to get away from the year before and early this year!
2. Kidd was brought in to create open shots. If you watch the games where he was let loose he did that. I can't put allt he blame on Kidd when guys were missing 15' jump shots where a defender wasn't within 4' of them.

The end result for a PG who has weak shooting skills and a team who can't shoot is defeat. That is what the Mavs will deal with now if they don't adress one or the other (or both). When we had Harris he could spark the offense all by himself with some amazing cuts to the rim. We won't see that out of Kidd but he does have vision. Just think if he had Chandler or someone else to throw up log passes for easy dunks to.
In the end Kidd made this team worse but he had a LOT of help doing it. The whole TEAM let the team down. The only pass I give on that one is Bass as he played awesome. Dirk played well too but didn't spark the team the way he should.

May 27, 2008  12:17 PM ET

Coach Killer is correct. Probably the first time in a long time that a coach pulled him from a game because he sucked. Kidd was never the same after that.

May 27, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Mark has no one to blame but himself for this debacle. The bad thing, he lost a good, up and coming coach too.

May 27, 2008  12:48 PM ET

"A key to next season will be Rick Carlisle's ability to devise a system that maximizes the skills of his 35-year-old point guard."

What skills? Kidd is the most overrated player this league has. He gets paid $20 million dollars to score 5 points per game and have 6 assists. His teammates take so many poor, fadeaway-three) shots (First Carter, then Dirk) that miss that he can't help but to grab rebounds. He shows no leadership qualities either. That is a myth that should have been broken when he shuffled his way of Jersey, a team that probably thought retaining him for the move to Brooklyn would have been a good move. Kidd just wasn't worth giving up Harris. Lakers fans should be equally glad they didn't surrender Bynum in some of the earlier trade talks

May 27, 2008  12:54 PM ET

"35-year-old point guard" it was gamble and they lost worse than Charles Barkley. I may be time to blow this thing up. Jason Kidd a 35 yr old pro pg who hasn't developed a jump shot worth fearing. We miss you Devin.
