Leafs to pitch talent to Sundin

When Cliff Fletcher sits down with Mats Sundin next week to convince him to return to the Maple Leafs, one of the selling points will be Nikolai Kulemin. The Leafs have high hopes for their second rounder from 2006 and former linemate of Evgeni Malkin in the Russian League, to the extent he and his wife are in Toronto this week finalizing visas and looking for a home. And Fletcher doesn't mean an address near Ricoh Coliseum.

The Leafs pitched any talent they had a long time ago.

This should prove interesting how long it takes matts to decide. exactly nothing has changed that would convince him to come back . "hey Matss please sign here...so far we've..well..we've...ummm...you can have the same locker".

Now how did I know that this is the thread where all the comedians would be visiting today?

May 28, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Its still pretty early...I suppose that Durk and Bostongm are still snugley tucked away in bed wearing their Gary Roberts pajamas and Otherone in his Bozo the Clown ones.

May 28, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Good God! Nikolai Kulemin!!!!! Where do I sign?

May 28, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Jesus,do they need some talent.

May 28, 2008  10:16 AM ET

I can just imagine the conversation... Hey Matts, forget going to a playoff contender and stay with us. We have a second round pick who's going to come in and turn the franchise around. Fletcher must be senile!

May 28, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Hahaha so now Cliff has to "convince" Mats to stay, meanwhile at the Trade Deadline he couldn't convince him to go.

If Mats wanted to play for a contender, he had his chance at the TD. He'll be back with the Leafs.

May 28, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Agreed Bentley...Let us not forget about what that "astonished luncheon companion Blurted out!"

May 28, 2008  11:05 AM ET

What, now they want him to stay? They've got some nerve I'll give 'em that.

May 28, 2008  11:06 AM ET

What I am most curious about is how the Leafs think this kid is going to help turn things around. I mean, he played with Malkin, for crying out loud, and NOT in the Stanley Cup Finals either. Anyone who played with that kid across the pond had good numbers. The fact that Kulemin was only a 2nd rounder tells you how much confidence people had that the kid actually has the skill, as opposed to having ridden a star's coattails. Most teams looking to improve like to get great players, not also-rans, but I guess this is still the Maple Leaf Way.

May 28, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Will someone explain to me why this team offers no-trade clauses to all its players? Only to later beg those players to waive them?

May 28, 2008  11:15 AM ET

gocan- Your comments lack a little...shall we say...Je ne c'est quoi with that stupid avatar logo.
Next- Contrary to a popular rumour being circulated by a certain bostongm, yesterday was NOT my birthday nor am I close to 56.
Bear in mind folks...That bostongm has some pretty strange ideas at times.
Such as his wonderful TD titles he was offering around fannation sports for a challenge...
Here is a sampling of bostongm's Sport Throwdown Titles!
1) Who would win in a fight between Chuck Norris and Gary Roberts
2) The Incredible HULK vs Darth Vader
3) My personal favourite, "If you were the GM of a professional hockey team, Which Ninja Turtle would you want on your Hockey Team?"

May 28, 2008  11:32 AM ET

With all the "changes" the Leafs have made so far, this kid is the final piece to the puzzle to make them serious contenders. HAHAHA
I think Sundin will be back but, just because of his loyalty to the organization. Nothing more.

May 28, 2008  11:46 AM ET

He's not going anywhere, Fletcher just called him in to get his opinion on what overpaid over the hill veteran they could trade this kid for.

May 28, 2008  12:37 PM ET

I wonder if he does bring Mats back if Sundin gets a no-trade clause?
Mats should really change his number too. He doesn't feel 13 is unlucky...
Mats should talk to Marino about that. The only way 13 becomes lucky for Mats is if he shoots up to 7'1 inches tall in the off season...otherwise forget it.

May 28, 2008  12:49 PM ET

Wow.....how is bostongm NOT in the sports media business, with hard hitting questions like that? Donatello, is my obvious choice, he's got the hockey smarts.

in my opinion, if he does return, which I suspect he will, nothing will change. Once again they'll be in the same position they have been for the last few years; which is struggling to sqeak into the 8th playoff spot only to lose, then fans will once again, demand 'sweeping changes'.

May 28, 2008  01:25 PM ET

All of you people ripping on Kulemin and saying he is no good, should really watch him play. I know it's easier for some of you to make fun of the Leafs, and put them down, then actually admit when they did something right. However, this kid could definitely turn into something to hang your hat on. He can pass, he can score, he's quick and he throws his body around like Scott Stevens. I'm not saying he's the next Ovechkin or Malkin, but this kid isn't another John Pohl, put there to take up space.

Also, for their 3 years in Russia; Malkin's point totals (12, 32, 47). Kulemin's (13, 39, 33). Pretty respectable and comparable. Also for whoever said he was only good because of Malkin....the ONE year they played together Tlusty had 5 goals and 13 points. He went on to score over 20 goals the following two years.

Do you people just like to pertend to know hockey, or do you just hate the Leafs so much, you actually can't have an unbiased opinion on them?

May 28, 2008  02:00 PM ET

Spo, I'm not sure how often you visit these threads, but hating the Leafs is the cool thing to do these days.

You make some great points tho, and don't be stranger. We could always use more Leaf fans around here.

Isn't that right GoC?
