Pens coach: Red Wings break the rules

The Red Wings gave up the fewest number of goals in the NHL during the regular season, so their defensive prowess should not come as a surprise to the Penguins. Not having faced the Red Wings in the regular season, the Penguins did not know exactly how the Red Wings accomplished that feat. But Penguins coach Michel Therrien has concluded that generating scoring chances against Detroit is hard to do because of their ability to subtly obstruct the opponent. Therrien credited Detroit for its ability to shut down his team, but he also made clear that the Red Wings blur the line between outstanding defense and breaking the rules, specifically the way their players impede the progress of the Penguins to the puck.

Sounds like someone is making excuses for his team getting thumped.

Go Wings!

May 28, 2008  07:23 AM ET

Maybe the Penguins should use their tactic of subtly being obstructed and taking a swan dive.

May 28, 2008  07:38 AM ET

Why cant he admit his team is w/o a doubt being outplayed .....?!?!?

May 28, 2008  07:38 AM ET

This man should have been born a woman, with two sets of lips, so he could piss and moan at the same time. The refs at this level aren't going to buy into his bullship. Bettman might though. Guess we'll see if the wings have to play against the refs tonight too. Someone needs to understand playoff hockey me thinks.

This is just plain pathetic. Michelle has been finding reasons to cry all season and especially during the playoffs despite going 12-2 through the first 3 rounds. The Pens are a good team. They dont need their coach to sound like a little baby all the time. The Red Wings are a WAY better team than the Pens, thats all there is to it.

May 28, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Being a Canadian i have to say this... TYPICAL FRENCHMAN!!! all they do it **** and COMPLAIN. Why not just admit Detroit plays a better team game and Babcock is a better coach. I dont get all the excuses. All that is going to do is upset Detroit and make them work Harder.

May 28, 2008  08:22 AM ET

He's just trying to get all the attention on himself so his players don't have to feel all the pressure. Typical move of coaches who feel like they have no other buttons to press.

May 28, 2008  08:28 AM ET

That's always the way isn't it? Your team is being out played, out goaltended & outsmarted at every turn and the best you can do is blame the refs? Seems to me that Pittburgh started game one with several power plays, did he forget that? Face it, Crosby isn't the second coming now is he? The only time I've seen him in this series is when they show him whinning on the bench. Why is the press blaming Malkin? I thought Crosby was the golden boy. Oh... but Lemieux probably sees himself when he looks at Crosby, so he can't blame him, After all, Lemieux was a bit of a whiner too.

May 28, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Mike, this might be going out on a limb here but maybe, just maybe, the Red Wings are trouncing you because they actually are a better team. Your team still has two forwards and a goalie who's hot streak ran out. You won't beat the best team in the league with two players.

May 28, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Therrien...TheRien- I was going to comment, but I'll get the coffee first.
Can't believe I just read that headline...

May 28, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Coach Mike - I'll admit I haven't watched every second of the series (It's boring the bejesus out of me) but in IMO Crosby's the only one that looks like he's playing for something, and Staal on some occasions.

I just don't think he has the room to operate. Like the article said, the Pens didn't see the Detroit defence until now, so they had no idea what to expect, and probably underestimated them a little bit.

Oh, and only giving him roughly 20 minutes of ice time a night is just not enough.

May 28, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Therrien seems insecure about his team's manhood, so he's trying to recruit some zebras to cover his own inadequacies.

That may work where you come, Frenchie, but Pittsburgh and Detroit are two of the hardest working blue-collar cities in America; where success is built on hard work, not bribery.

May 28, 2008  08:52 AM ET

It stinks Therrien is saying all this stuff, even with the Pens now why does every team cry when their team is going down the toliet in the playoffs? The Sens, Rangers, Flyers (not so much) all cried, and it got them nowhere, so why would it work for the Pens? C'mon Michel, you and this team are better than that.

May 28, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Never heard so much crying in my life.

May 28, 2008  08:55 AM ET

So TheRien says the Wings blur the line. Well I suppose that is correct on several levels...speed, puck movement, shots.
But to say the Wings blur the line of players going to the puck!
Maybe TheRien could teach that subtlety to Roberts & Talbot instead of their blatant assaults on a concussed player without the puck!
The Wings cheating hahahahahaha
That's about as stupid as someone telling you that a roster player is not a professional athlete! hahahaha
Or someone else...no lets make that Otherone-else failing to grasp the concept.
Hahahahha

May 28, 2008  08:56 AM ET

The Pens don't need to make excuses, they are a young team who will be back. Don't degrade the accomplishment now... Idea: if it is so effective for Detroit, you might want try doing the same thing against them, since they arent having a hard time scoring.

Get out of here, intimate. You're not welcome here. Go bother some mormons or retirement homes.

Michelle is a bit cracky. He must be starting his period.
