Cuban believes he can buy Cubs

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban could be a more viable suitor than long thought as the sale of the Cubs heads toward a possible year-end resolution. The outspoken Cuban, considered a long shot to gain approval from baseball's conservative owners, suggested in a recent radio interview that some of those owners who also have NBA teams should help his cause, not hurt it. And he suggested Tribune Co. isn't likely to accept a lesser bid over a popularity contest. So should Cubs fans believe Cuban is a more viable bidder than early reports suggested? ''They're all viable until the league tells us they're not,'' said Cubs chairman Crane Kenney, who is heading owner Sam Zell's efforts to sell.

Why am I reminded of Bill Veeck... Too bad Cuban doesn't have a wooden leg. Or-does-he?!?

Cuban believes he is the Anti-Christ.

May 29, 2008  08:26 AM ET

oops...actually, I believe that.

May 29, 2008  08:32 AM ET

If it's truly anti, then wouldn't Christ be lower case? As in, it's no longer a proper noun?

And Cuban would be awesome for baseball... He could be the new George Stienbrenner. And as the Yankee go into rebuilding (pfft) mode, the Cubs could become the new Yankees. Now that would be the anti-christ in action.

it would be good for baseball, having an owner who wants to win. there is only 2 in the league right now.

May 29, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Let me guess Whalers, John Henry and George Stienbrenner... I don't buy that. I think most owners want to win and the rest just want to put the cheapest team on the field and rake in the free dough from revenue sharing.

I believe the moon is made out of cheese...can I get a loge at Wrigtuckey?

I wouldn't want Cuban buying my team - especially after the Jason Kidd trade? That guy REALLY knows how to run a team/business.

agree w/ Fire Marshall Bill... I mean the guy above... But seriously I agree. close eyes, count to 3 and repeat.

May 29, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Well since Hank will never be the next Steinbrenner maybe it is time we let Cuban have a crack at the throne.

May 29, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Cuban is an excellent owner, but I must admit I like watching him suffer year after year with the Mavs. His buying the Cubs would probably be a good move for all parties. They're one of baseball's classic teams, and having a passionate owner at the helm would inject even more life than their success this season has.

Will Cuban threaten to accept the trophy wearing nothing but a man thong if the Cubs ever win?

The U.S. Governement is omnipotent. I am everywhere on every post every minute of every day. Besides, it's like 9am or 1400 zulu time.
