Why Giants had to trade Benitez
Armando Benitez alienated himself from teammates and became a negative force in the clubhouse, leaving Giants General Manager Brian Sabean no choice but to move him. The Marlins spoke to the Giants about reacquiring Benitez as recently as spring training, but the two teams could not settle on the player involved.

He has always had good stuff. I wouldn't touch him. He has a habit of losing big ones and then plunking guys after the fact. Bad karma man, bad karma.

This is not a new event. Take a look at his career. Despite great talent, especially in his younger days, no team has kept him around very long. For instance, it became clear even during his early days in Baltimore that his personality rubbed many of his teammates and management the wrong way. In fact, privately and with little prompting, Cal Ripken, his teammate at the time, refered to him as a jerk -- and this was at a time when Benitez's strong on-field performance gave the team reason to look past some of his personality issues. Maybe he's changed since then, I don't know. But maybe not.
