Blues have plan for Armstrong

The Blues addressed both present and future needs in one big swoop Thursday, extending the contract of general manager Larry Pleau through the 2009-10 season and hiring former Dallas Stars general manager Doug Armstrong to be his eventual replacement. Until he takes over in 2010, Armstrong will carry the title of vice president of player personnel, though both he and team president John Davidson say Armstrong has no set job description and will handle any and everything within the organization.

They must like this picture a lot ........

I don't know how he's going to be doing that, considering he is supposed to sign with the Leafs, right? Wasn't he desperate to be on that "Management Committee"? Doesn't everyone in the league have working for the Leafs as their top priority? I don't know how he's going to be able to hold both jobs, but if you listen to Leafs fans, this guy is supposed to be in Toronto right now. Its like oxygen for NHL managers - they just can't live without working for Toronto. Am I wrong here? This defies all logic, right? hahahahaha

I really AM starting to feel bad for Leaf fans, but my raw hatred of the organization makes me almost giddy when the list of guys who "want to work for the Leafs" keeps whittling down in this manner. Let's see now, how many rejections are we up to?

Scotty Bowman
Ken Holland
Jim Nill
Brian Burke (for now at least)
Jim Rutherford
Doug Wilson
John Muckler
Wayne Gretzky (hahaha, what a joke that was)
Dave Nonis? (what happened there? Just kinda went away it seems)

I'm sure I'm missing someone on the list...was the GM in Minnesota considered for a while there too? For some reason I think so. Hmm. Making me laugh though, haha, sorry Leaf fans, get your ulcer meds ready for next season!

Well if they hire the guy...is it such a reach that they have a plan in mind?

May 30, 2008  08:43 AM ET

oh, and congrats to Doug Armstrong - he's got some awfully good job security for the next 6 years or so no, with Pleau not set to retire for another 2-3 seasons

Gocan- It surprises me that sitting up there on your super stacker, that your vision isn't a little clearer!
Right now, the situation with the Leafs is, they do not want to fill in the spot they feel will eventually be occupied by Burke.
That is what is holding things up and at this time there is plenty of politics happening in Ducky land to consider.
So the Leafs, are looking to build a management team that will eventually be under Burke. Guys they are talking to, want control, the Leafs are not prepared to go there yet.
Laugh all you want now...This team will get what they want sooner or later.

Till Peddie re-organizises the power structure,i'm afraid the Leafs will be in the "running" for alot more people there go. Long live Peddie!!!

May 30, 2008  10:11 AM ET

The Blues are a strange team sometimes.....I don't really get tthe logice in this move......unless they just want Armstrong to be GM so much that they want to lock him up now, even though they don't want to get rid of Pleau

My vision in 20/20, Bauner, its those blue tinted lenses that keeps messing with yours - and every other Leaf fan's for that matter! What was that Public Enemy song? "Don't Believe the Hype" - that should be the Leaf Nation's slogan!

May 30, 2008  10:26 AM ET

You see Gocan...you really can't keep knocking Leaf Nation.
That is a fan base that will only continue to get stronger...
vs a Hockey "town"...a "Nation" sticks with their guys.
And as for you, Mr. WBTEgm...obviously you're worried about it. The Leafs will out point those lowly Bruins this coming season.

May 30, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Yeah, they have a plan and, it's a simple one: Win or you're out of here! That's all.

May 30, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Worried about what? The Leafs and Peddie? Hhahahahaha. I have no worries. Especially coming from them. They're at least 2-3 seasons away from becoming a real team. Maybe even more than that with Peddie running the show. And the WBTE thing is getting old. I'm 30 years old...i'm hardly "young". I wish.LOL.

The B's will be even better next year there Bauner. A healthy Bergeron to boot. I just hope we dont have anywhere near the level of injuries we've had next year. Knock on wood.

May 30, 2008  11:18 AM ET

If you want to knock on wood, fortunatly for you that Sinden is still a senior "Advisor" for the B's.
You know...the guy that had the failed lumber company just as Team Canada picked him up in 72. Oh...right...that was 36 YEARS ago...a little before your time.
Well, since that's out of reach for you...There is that giant wooden pilon you guys in Bean town think is the 2nd coming of RGO....
Just grab your step ladder and knock on wood there WBT...er BGM.

May 30, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Please....Sinden is just an old drunk that got an "advisor" tag slapped on him. He has NO power what-so-ever. He's just the owners bi--tch. AND there will never be another RGO. Chara doesnt have a sliver of talent that RGO had. Chara cant even carry his jock-strap for crying out loud. In saying that...the big fella does carry around his own weight. He may be slow...but he's still effective. He's gotten nominated for the Norris for the 2nd time in his career. You know he has SOME talent. Has Kubina,McCabe,or Kaberle ever been nominated for the Norris? Of course not.

May 30, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Hhahahahahhahahahahaha.

Still trying to get my Leafs jersey. All I can find in my size on Ebay are either throwbacks or current with a name I don't want. D*** it, i want a Palmeteer or a Salming! And Blue, not white
Do I need to go on Ebay's Canada site?

May 30, 2008  12:57 PM ET

Actually bostongm...since you brought it up...you know what. Kaberle is twice the defenceman Chara is...So the fact that Chara gets these nominations at all are actually quite astonishing.

May 30, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Spiny...why don't you just go to a sport store and order one with the name and number you want on it?

May 30, 2008  01:23 PM ET

I'd take Chara ahead of Kaberle - Kaberle is a great player, but Chara doesn't take games off

May 30, 2008  01:49 PM ET

Chara's over-rated.

Baun-ded
Because here in New York, people think the world begins and ends here, and that takes in sports as well.
