Sundin opens door to move

Mats Sundin has opened the door to playing somewhere other than with the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. And it may be the Leafs' management follies that ultimately push him through it. "My dream and the best scenario would be if I ended my career as a Toronto Maple Leaf. That hasn't changed. But I'm not going to say that I'm not going to play anywhere else either, because I'm not really in control of that," Sundin said. "I do think I have a lot of different options I can explore."

This guy is unbelievable... thanks Mats... we could have gotten a pile for you at the trade deadline, but its more important that you got to play those extra games befor ethe end of the season - oh, and it's ok that once again you were unavailable when the team needed you the most during the playoff push... at least you were injured this time - not like last year where you scored 1 goal in the last 20 games during the push for the playoffs...

you sure are worth every million we pay you...

why is Toronto so hung up on this one guy?...

Move on!!!... this is just stupid... they should have bought him out right after the lockout...

May 30, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Fonzie: you've jumped the shark again! Well done, mate.

May 30, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Yeah, Toronto treated him real great. "Hey Mats, you've given your heart to this organization for 10 years. Mind if we trade you? Oh, you wont waive that clause? Well FU then, we're gonna lowball you buy offering you a $1 million deal. Sign or get lost, punk."

The Leafs are such a classy organization...

May 30, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Its a ploy so that the Leafs can't lowball him with their contract offer. He backed himself into a corner last year when he said he only wanted to play for the Leafs, and the team knew it. If he was only willing to play for the Leafs, than they could probably get him to sign for 4-5 million, but now, with the possibility of a bidding war out there, Toronto will have to offer him his 6-7 million instead. Its all about marketing, and giving someone a monopoly is alot like masterbating - in the end, you're only screwing yourself

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they sit down and tell Matts the plan for the future. 2 years at 4-5 million a year is what the leafs should pay him......but more importantly they need to sell him on the plan cuz im sure he doesnt need the money badly enough to have his career end with the same ole same ole.He could of taken the trade and never looked back...that was his easy out but he stood tall. Too bad more players arent that way.You can play on my team any day Matts...good luck.

As far as Mats is concerned.
Lets not put the cart before the horse here.
Before the Leafs make him any kind of an offer, they need to fill in the Coaching issue & look at the free agent markets.
Estimate about 7 million for Mats to sign...Can that money be better spent?
If you do sign Mats, there is still the age old problem of a winger for him.
Are they going to try to move McCabe or Kabina?
Mats won't retire. He still has too much hockey in him.
Odds are he may want to opt for another 1yr contract. If so, then the Leafs could do that, but no way do you give him a no-trade clause.
This could work for all parties favourably. If by the next TD...the Leafs have to make a deal & Mats wants to play for a winner...then they move him and get something back.
He gets to stay with Toronto until that time which seems to be his wish.

way to make up your mind now.

May 30, 2008  09:42 AM ET

The Maple Leafs are the laughing stock of the NHL.
Sundin will really stick it to 'em if he leaves now knowing they could have gotten a few picks/players at the deadline if he had accepted a trade.

Not a big Mike Milbury fan but last night he had me in stitches on TSN.
Dreger just gave his "insider" report...as follows.
Mats has 3 options, sign with Toronto, sign with another team as a free agent or retire.
Milbury looks over at Dreger and cracks up almost landing on the floor..."so that's your insider report Dreger," he says, busting his gut laughing...
Me too.
Way to call em Dreger...Thanks for letting us all know the inside scoop! LOL

Toronto will have a good season next year.

Just thought you guys needed a laugh. A Maple....Laugh.

May 30, 2008  10:36 AM ET

He ain't going anywhere. Going to another team involves risk and Matts is not a risk taker. He'll play it safe and stay put.

May 30, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I think its going to be funnier to see how the Pens are going to try to keep this team together that they spent so long in the NHL basement trying to build Durk.

May 30, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Think they will offer the wings Matts for Hasek? hahahaha

May 30, 2008  10:48 AM ET

From the look of the picture, he can always go replace the guy in "Midnight Oil"

May 30, 2008  11:14 AM ET

I think the media is slipping. Yet another player on the move that isn't linked to The Rangers

May 30, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I think the Pens will be allright Baun. Let Hossa walk, try to get a deal with Malone. There are plenty of quality UFAs that would jump at the chance to join the Pens. I think down the road they will have an issue with Malkin. Of the core players Crosby, Staal, Fleury, Malkin, I'm guessing Malkin will be the Jagr candidate. When the Pens do have to deal someone I hope they get more back than the Jagr trade, that was pitiful. But hey, this thread is about the Maple Laffs. So is anyone excited about the Love Guru?

May 30, 2008  11:25 AM ET

I don't think Hossa is going anywhere. Crosby is going to want to keep him.
Ive said this before. The Pens have a big money problem at center.
Move Malkin after the Wings eliminate the Pens this year. Maybe even make a deal for one of this years top pick from the draft...Defence would help.
I am looking forward to the Love Guru...it looks like fun. Even looks like MiniMe is in it which should delight his number 1 supporter, Spiny. LOL

May 30, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Love Guru is either going to be brilliant (Austin Powers) or awful (Cat in The Hat)
It was nice that Bettman could get some off season work in this movie

I am actually looking forward more to Get Smart. I hate the whole fake notalgia trend, as to me it seems that no one can think of anything on their own. But if they had to do this movie, Steve Carell is perfectly cast.
