Bucs cut one-time rookie wonder

Bruce Gradkowski got from the Bucs on Friday what Chris Simms wanted - a ticket out of town. In a move that his agent classified as a "courtesy," the Bucs began to make good on their promise to alleviate a seven-player logjam at quarterback by releasing Gradkowski. It likely will include projected starter Jeff Garcia, projected backup Brian Griese and a trio of players - Simms, Luke McCown and Josh Johnson - vying for the role of quarterback of the future. That Gradkowski won't be a part of that group comes as a bit of a surprise because many figured the beleaguered Simms would be the odd man out. Simms, in fact, might have appreciated it if he was. Disgruntled over the way he has been treated since suffering a spleen injury that ruined his 2006 and 2007 seasons, Simms recently told the Bucs he no longer feels he is part of their future and asked to be released or traded. The Bucs have been slow to accommodate Simms, in part because they aren't sure after months of inactivity what his trade value is or whether he still has value to them.

Simms will be the last one they cut. They remember that he led them to the play offs in 2005 and do not want to look like they let one get away unless they are sure he is finished. I think he has a long career ahead of him still.

bears, vikes, chiefs should all be calling Gradkowski's agent. he'll at the least provide depth for them.

rookie wonder? i had to do a double take on the article, looking for a former rookie wonder..only to come across bruce gradkowski. yes, i agree with the article, he was a former rookie. enjoy working at the piggly wiggly in toldeo, since i'm sure you made "millions" as a rookie wonder.

May 31, 2008  09:20 AM ET

hahaha Rocket...lol
I did the same thing.. I saw the headline and the picture and said "Why are they using a pic of Gradkowski" ?

May 31, 2008  10:08 AM ET

We don't have piggly wigglies in T-town just Krogers but I'm sure they need someone to gather the carts from the parking lot.Too bad we really pulled for him when he got drafted but i don't think anyone really thought he'd be something special.Definately NOT a rookie wonder!

With this move I'm concerned with the Bucs' depth at QB. Who is going to be their new 14th string QB?

May 31, 2008  01:16 PM ET

I heard the real reason Gradkowski was let go was because the Bucs management kept on misspelling his name all the time. A lot easier to spell Garcia, Simms and Griese they reasoned !!!

May 31, 2008  01:26 PM ET

One down, 14 to go

May 31, 2008  02:24 PM ET

i really don't think you can call him a rookie wonder......

May 31, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Wow "rookie wonder" Bruce Gradkowski....apparently we're now classifying anybody who was a rookie who had a moderately good first year in the NFL a rookie wonder.

May 31, 2008  04:08 PM ET

Both QB's sorta like......suck. Heck that boy Trent Dilfer was better than them two chumps. Love the uniforms, best looking in the league.

May 31, 2008  04:56 PM ET

It still boggles me how many people dislike Garcia. If you're a Bucs fan, shut up and enjoy the fact that he's leading your team to victories. I'll give you Griese, but Garcia doesn't suck.

May 31, 2008  07:58 PM ET

Simms is not the future. The guy has never been good. He's been making a career out of his last name for a long time. He was terrible at Texas as well.

June 1, 2008  01:31 AM ET

Simms should be glad that he even has a job, even though its a lowly one with the Buccaneers. Beggars can't be choosers.

He ruined his own career well before the spleen injury... 2006: 0-3, 7 interceptions - 1 touchdown.

Officer! Officer! They're looting the Food King! Sorry. All the talk about grocery stores made me a little nostalgic.

Simms, McCown, and Griese should be battling for QB2. They have to give Johnson a reasonable shot to develop. They should do what they can to keep him for at least this year. If Johnson is good enough, or shows enough promise, I'd try to get a look at him with the 2nd unit.

Garcia is old, and has injury problems. He maybe will play for another year or two. They have to find a QB2 that they are comfortable with taking over as QB1 when Garcia retires on his own, or is forced to retire when his play starts to diminsih. The only one young enough and least spoiled is Johnson, to be groomed. If he doesn't pan out when that time comes, who cares he was a fifth round choice. When you have a very old QB starting, you need to prepare a young back up to eventually take the reins.

the wonder of it all...no gradkowski? i mean, who will complete those two yard tight end screens on 3rd and three? chuckette...how did we get here, where are we going, how long have we got???....
the answer, in bucette land is 42, of course...

Simms is one of the most prolific passers in Texas history you idiot. Jump off of Majors sack and realize he never won a big game either. Hell , he never got us to one. Remember when he lost to New Mexico State and Stanford?

Rookie wonder?

As in:

I wonder why that mediocre rookie with the goofy name is starting?
