Wings, Habs to pursue Sundin

The Red Wings lost out on the sweepstakes for one of agent J.P. Barry's Swedish clients. But while Fabian Brunnstrom is signed, sealed and delivered to Dallas, there's a chance Mats Sundin could end up in Detroit. According to a league source, the Wings and the Canadiens are among the teams that will pursue the 37-year-old center if he opts to leave Toronto. He's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. The Wings will have room under the salary cap to make a significant splash in free agency, at least for next season.

No way Mats puts on a Habs sweater!
However Detroit is another matter entirely. That is if Mats signs with them for the entire year...just so he can feel a full part of the drive to the playoffs. Pretty scary that the Wings could add the Egg to their lineup if they want to. But I think this could all just be posturing to get more bucks out of the Leafs and a no-trade deal.

He seems to be about the right age for the Wings... He would be a great addition, and deserves a chance for the cup.

Doesn't Detroit have enough Sweeds? There's gotta be a law against another country's National team being transplanted to an NHL club!

memo to Detroit: put out the welcome mats!

It makes me sick to watch what???s happening here. Mats bails on the Leafs now when they can???t get anything for him. Why couldn???t he have gone at the last trading deadline when the Leafs could have got some really good young protects for him. This just proves what I???ve always known, Sundin is a selfish person who only thinks of himself.

May 31, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Too much money. Concentrate on keeping what we have and devloping young talent.

May 31, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Wow, such vitriol. How do you know he's going to bail on them anyway? This is more Rumor than Truth right now.

May 31, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Mats will stay in TO. He wouldn't let the Leafs trade him at the deadline and he won't bail on them now. He has said on more than one occasion that he wants to retire as a Leaf.

May 31, 2008  12:21 PM ET

it's a ploy leaf fans, he's really not going anywhere, but your team is a good couple of years away from competing for anything and that'll put him close to 40 and close to hanging it up, so does it really matter if he stays or goes?, the only indication that he'd leave is if he wanted to win the cup and he answered that question last year by staying!

May 31, 2008  12:48 PM ET

they should have traded him. too bad every player to join the leafs gets a no trade clause.

May 31, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Otherone- Re your should have traded him comment...You cannot trade him if he has a no-trade clause. Only 5 leafs have that deal anyway and that is thanks to JFJ. I doubt you'll see much more of it in the future.
And Kyles hat is blue. Are you colour blind?

May 31, 2008  02:56 PM ET

enough of swedes???? Can it be?? Look at Wings and Stars. Scuccsess spells SWEDEN!!! (sry if i spell wrong...)
But my belive is that he will stay in maple laugh.... (too stupid to pack his bags i belive)
But he still is the king in Hockey mecca......

what peter forsberg couldn,t commit today??
this crap cis getting boring.

May 31, 2008  06:38 PM ET

It's time the Wings brought up their prospects and quit letting them waste in the minors. I don't think Mats is what the team needs.

June 1, 2008  12:53 AM ET

He's staying in Toronto, but if he decided not to for some strange reason, Detroit would be the place. Biminator, you are wrong though. He's nowhere near old enough for the Wings. He's ten years younger than Cheli. And 4thstreet, in case you have forgotten, Peter Forsberg won't play for Detroit. They tried once, and he said no.

June 1, 2008  09:36 AM ET

If he's going to sign with Detroit for a Cup, he's making a mistake. The Wings will win this year, but they won't repeat next year. They can thank the Dallas Stars for knocking off the toughest teams in the Western Conference this year, and then not having enough left to beat Detroit. The Wings had to play Nashville and an injury-dpleated Colorado team before playing Dallas. I don't thinkk they'll be that lucky next year.
I'll sit and wait for the comments from goCanada!

Right. The Western Conf. is strong but the Wings could have a dynasty with very few changes and a little luck. And anyone needs luck. Anyone.

The Stockholm Red Wings would be a very logical choice.
