Fix for Eagles-Sheppard quandry?

Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard will remain the 5-foot-10, 194-pound elephant in the room when players reconvene for this week's voluntary camp, even if the two-time Pro Bowler opts to steer clear of the eight organized team activities (OTAs) set for June 3-12. If the Eagles truly want to extricate themselves from the mess they made with Sheppard due to their inability to trade him before, during or after the April draft, then keep him. But instead of turning him into the next Troy Brown by occasionally lining him up as a slot receiver, in addition to his assumed role as the team's third/nickel corner -- per the latest batch of talk-radio rumors -- the Eagles have an opportunity to do the really smart thing here. Start him on the right side opposite Asante Samuel. Trading Sheppard away for yet more future draft picks just to rid themselves of this self-inflicted headache is thoroughly pointless for the Eagles, who need to hang on to the few playmakers they do have.

i agree, the draft is pointless. especially when you don't draft receivers with high picks for aging quarterbacks who need to spread the field. the draft is totally pointless. especially when you draft players like mamula.

relax philly fans, playing lito at slot and wide out is MUCH better than drafting a true WR who only plays on one side of the ball, and who has more size.

lito isn't a good corner. sheldon is better. if they were smaert they would get rid of them

Whatever man Lito is a very good corner, your just mad because he seems to always return a int for a TD against the Cowboys...

May 31, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Lito could be that "extra guy' on defense and then you can really call the Eagles D. "The Dirty Dozen" !!!

May 31, 2008  01:48 PM ET

redsox94 if you were smart you wouldnt spell it smaert, idiot, and lito is a awesome corner when he is healthy

May 31, 2008  03:26 PM ET

Why would you start Lito over Sheldon Brown? Brown is more consistent in coverage and more physical, too. Use Lito at the nickel position where he can be opportunistic and make plays.

chill.. people make typo's..
me personally, I cant wait to see what Samuel does.

Dox makes his annual pre-training camp return to Fannation (are there still other sports besides the NFL?)

Anyways, agree with phillyfool that when healthy Lito is a starting-caliber CB. But criticizing people for not correcting their typoes really is petty. It's sports debate, not typing class.

And what's up KP - been a bit - I'm with you on the curiosity about Samuel. Personally I'm expecting him to be another NE "system" guy, but time will tell.

May 31, 2008  07:42 PM ET

why all of this talk now? how come he didnt take plays at the wide-out spot earlyier in his career? he fielded punts for a very short period. why now? the eagles used the 49th pick for a wr....the same size as lito. anyway this talk is for nothing, lito will be traded for j. taylor.

How can you say that, lets see, the two years he went to the pro bowl, he was injured both years lol. that say something for his play, he shut down TO and Randy, The guy is a great cover corner with big play capability. If he could just stay on the field for a whole season we wouldnt even have made an attempt at asante. Everyone knows no matter how good the player they need to stay on the field, and thats litos only problem!

Probably the dumbest thing I've ever read. You must have never watched an eagles game.

June 1, 2008  01:34 PM ET

I am not convinced he is not a better corner than Samuel. We shall see.

June 2, 2008  02:39 AM ET

He should stay in Philly for two reason, one he can play the corner and two ,let he try returning.

June 2, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Considering the most teams play with five defensive backs on over half their snaps these days, a third cornerback is essentially still a starting position. I agree in your "base" defense, I'd rather have Brown out their than Sheppard, at least assuming Samuel's on the other side. But I see no reason why the Eagles can't play a nickel for most the game anyway. Especially since Dawkins is practically an extra linebacker. As for lining up as an receiver - not a bad gimmick, but not something I want to see more than once or twice a game.

Sheppard will disrupt the Eagles like Owens did when the Eagle insulted Owens. Now they do the same to Sheppard.
Sheppard will cause havic, but in the locker room. They would be best to trade him as quickly as they can.Maybe to there Rival the Cowboys.
