Have Pistons already fired Saunders?

And now the speculation begins. Will Flip Saunders stay or will he go? Or a more pointed question: Is the Pistons' head coach already gone? Saunders was among the first to leave, departing shortly after noon and heading directly to his vehicle without speaking with media members assembled in the parking lot. More than two hours later, the perceived top candidate to replace him emerged. Assistant coach Michael Curry talked briefly about his future with the Pistons but said he didn't speak about the top job with team executives Saturday morning.

The Sonics need to sign him if he's fired.

He's so much better than Carlesimo

While I wouldn't call him a 're-tread' coach-
since he was in Minn for so long......

What the h#!! has he really accomplished in his career ?

1 good year with Minn (in 10) -granted their GM was HORRIBLE
let LBJ beat him last year
failed to get the pistons to the finals-
don't tell me he MADE the finals with them-
the east is HORRIBLE. there really were only 2 TOP LEVEL teams
it would've been an EMBARASSMENT had they not made it

No coach is going to be any better than the players on the floor. Saunders did as good as could be expected in Minny with the personnel he had. He can't be blamed for not winning a championship when he never got the tools to do the job. Same thing in Detroit. Where would the Pistons be if they had drafted Carmelo Anthony instead of Darko? Suanders is not the problem in Detrokit.

He should go to Miami if they accept him. If not, what about Phoenix?

June 1, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Phoenix needs a fresh start and the Miami idea probably wouldn't work b/c of P. Riley. I am not a huge fan of Saunders but I am tired of the coaching carousel. Many teams would love to be in the Eastern Finals, get a center, try again next year.

As a Pistons fan, the most disappointing part of this story is that Rasheed wasn't leaving with Flip...

June 1, 2008  10:24 AM ET

biminator.. I wouldnt be surprised if they both go

June 1, 2008  10:27 AM ET

As I've said before, this team lost all my respect when they turned on Flip in the playoffs during his first year after singing his praises during the regular season. Having said this, I haven't seen anything in Flip's resume that would make me believe he's a championship level coach. He's undoubtedly above average, but it just seems that he's cursed in the post season. One would think with his many years in Minnesota and during his time with the Pistons he'd have picked up a clue or two, but alas, no such luck. Perhaps what Flip needs is a really good assistant who fills in his gaps and doesn't really have an eye on the top job. Of course this is an outsider's view and in no way a slight against Terry Porter. I'm just saying that having an assistant who players could possibly see as the heir apparent might be a distraction for some, if not all the players. The proverbial "too much of a good thing".

if he his, the bulls need to forget bout collins and get this man

June 1, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Unfortunately not many teams are in the market for a player with mood swings like a woman going threw menopause.

The only key player with legitmate trade value (assuming we want to keep all the young pieces) is Rip, and maybe Tay. If we can package two of the three with a high draft pick for an Elton Brand or Amare type player, you gotta pull the trigger on something like that. Ironically, our best trade partners this off-sason might be teams like the Suns and Mavs, since they aren't afraid of a bit of a shake-up either.

One thing I do know is that Joe D isn't afraid of making moves. (trading top players like Stackhouse and Hill). Just keep him away from high draft picks, and everything this guy does is gold.

I love Curry, but I think you gotta give Avery a look to replace Flip. I love the typ of coach Avery Johnson is. I still think Mavs made a mistake there.

June 1, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Right on Vocal point. If the piston players didn't think they were so good and can guard everyone one on one, or if Sheed got his ass in the post maybe they would be in more finals, but they always blame flip. Rick Carilise built the team and Larry Brown was cast off off from phily to Detroit, but they thought he was why they won they title. They were lucky LA imploded and fought with each other. FLip never had a chance, he's done a good job of maintaining. But he probably isn't a clutch coach, both he and KG never learned how to all those Years in Minny with the crap they dealt with. Flip would be perfect for a young and talented Bulls team, he's good at creating roles and turning everyone into shooters. Avery should coach the Pistons.

June 1, 2008  10:45 AM ET

No matter what the pistons do they are done.
They cant flop n e more so no more championships for them they should break up & never make the playoffs again!

June 1, 2008  11:20 AM ET

I hope they fire him. He was the worst thing to happen to that team. He tried changing their style of play, and allows Wallace to take too many threes when he should be banging in the paint most of the time. They went to the Finals for two consecutive years through their ferocious defensive style; and he had them focusing too much on trying to be an uptempo offensive team; and totally neglected working on defense or continuing their tough hard nose play which defined the Pistons When Larry Brown coached them.

June 1, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Avery Johnson has to get this job. He hasn't won anything either but I think the players will listen to him.

The Pistons have been "done" for over 3 years now. They run out of gas at the worst moment - maybe because of Rasheed's ADD (attention deficit disorder). Billups who is always clutch - is old and overrated. He had many big games, but I don't see him as the same player he once was.

The Pistons can trade Rasheed for draft picks and expiring contracts. Nothing more. But they HAVE to keep Prince and Hamilton because they are still young and they can play.
