Why Notre Dame AD left for Duke

It seems fitting that Kevin White's departure from Notre Dame to Duke would carry a measure of shock and mystery. The timing of the move by White caught many people involved in intercollegiate athletics by surprise. Yet as startling as the news was for Domers, the real surprise might have been White lasted this long after having his power essentially stripped during the transition from Willingham to Charlie Weis. White's fit with the Notre Dame AD job just wasn't as comfortable since that messy episode in December 2004, not that White handled the awkwardness with anything but grace and professionalism. The order to fire Willingham after three seasons came from the Notre Dame Board of Trustees and shook the usually unshakable AD, who favored retaining him. The same board also strongly pushed the hiring of Weis and a 10-year contract extension only seven games into his tenure. The shift created a job reality where White ultimately would be held accountable for decisions that weren't entirely his.

That sounds like the truth

I think the Weis extension is going to go down as one of the biggest blunders in college sports history. I mean, yeah, OK, I can see extending it a couple of years after that first season, maybe, but 10? After 7 games? Really?

Besides, I think of the big effects of the whole Patriots taping scandal has been to call into question Weis' reputation as an "offensive genius". (Well, and the atrocious offensive play of ND under him so far doesn't help either.) Maybe it's not so hard to be a "genius" if you know what the defense is calling.

They might as well have started holding White accountable for the decisions that weren't his because he WASN'T being held accountable for the terrible decisions that WERE his.

You won't find a true ND fan out there who's going to be crying over this move. White belongs at a place like Duke, where they already participate in a conference and where he can bring some major sports (in this case, football and probably baseball) to prominence. Notre Dame is a different animal, and he had lost touch with the unique aspects of that program that make Notre Dame what it is. I'm sure he'll do a fine job at Duke, but he was no longer effective at ND.

They'll be crying alright, crying because the football team stinks, AGAIN. Ty got a raw deal and it's apparent that White is just a figure-head. Like Dan Quayle, his position means nothing if he isn't making decisions. It's going to be an interesting 2-3 year run in South Bend and if things aren't going well, Chubby Charlie is going back to the NFL as an offensive coordinator.

June 1, 2008  02:50 PM ET

Ty didn't get a raw deal. He wasn't getting the job done, just as he isn't getting the job done at Washington. Read the recent articles where they also want him gone there after just a few seasons!

June 1, 2008  02:57 PM ET

White's leaving because the SS Bratwurst (aka ND) is sinking under Charlie's (considerable) weight and he wanted to leave before his own value deteriorated with the season. I wonder if Charlie ever longs for the days of OC at NE.

June 1, 2008  03:36 PM ET

Charlie does not long for those days... He sees ND as his challenge making them great again, I know this because I read his book ( which I recommend).
While they may not be a championship contender this year or next, ND will be a force again. Two solid recruiting classes, good coaching and a passion for their college with that aura that only notre dame can give a player (not that im doubting other college players passion) means ND will come good. Plus I have to say that because of ND's belief in education above all,it has affected their chance to be a consistent contender..because lets be honest some of the players in other colleges (which I shall not name) would not be considered because of questionable grades

Hey arejaydub... Did you have a point with that rambling? ND football just took a step forward with Kevin White leaving.

And completely ignorant people like you talk about Tee Willie getting a "raw deal," yet you're only able to come to these boards and rejoice about ND's recent failures BECAUSE of Willingham. By now, anybody with a brain knows that it was the absolute recruiting incompetence leading up to Willingham's firing that left ND football in a lurch last year. Weis led those players to three wins last year; Ty wouldn't have won one.

Mr. White's not the victim everyone plays him out to be. I don't give sympathy to an AD that raised ticket prices in the midst of a losing season that you then decide maximizing revenue.

Man, you are a true believer. The part about "good coaching" I find particularly ironic after last year's performance. Better get the lucky shilleleagh out because you're going to need it this year.

June 1, 2008  05:13 PM ET

Perhaps White did not help his situation but, I am left to wonder just how Weis will explain things should he have yet another losing season with a top recruiting class.

Understand me here, I do like Notre Dame Football and I like them as an Independant. I love their history and wish them well. I hate them being in the Big East with their other sports but that's another subject.

I just see Weis as being incompetant. He has a good NFl resume but has never coached in College. There is a vast difference in the two. I honestly don't understand how an offensive jeanious gives his duties over to an assistant. He was hired for his abilities in that area. It smells like someone trying to pus off the blaime should the inevitable happen. Poor Mike Haywood, he's a scape goat and doesn't even know it.

urm, that was "Push off the blaime" ouch. typos>>>>

Yes I did, sorry you don't read well enough to comprehend. Let me help you out. Point 1: ND football sucks. Point 2: Ty took Stanford to the Rose Bowl. STANFORD. Proof is in the pudding on Ty's coaching ability. See how long it takes your boy Harbaugh to do the same. Point 3: The athletic directorship at ND is a puppet position, to say the least. SC by 20+ Thanksgiving weekend.

So anytime a black person is fired and you don't think it's fair it's "transparent racism" Is this how it works?

19-d'oh:

Your words paint you as a total ignoramus. Aside from the sweeping inaccuracies and gross overgeneralizations you're polluting this comment thread with, the only true and obvious bigot/vile persona here is yourself.

As for the topic itself, I agree with those who said White might be good at the AD job, but not a good fit for ND. His approach simply didn't mesh with the tradition and expectations there.

RJ.... is that you out there playing the race card? Whatta shock....
Terrence & Phillip | 06/01/08, 10:07 PM

Defensive are we? A tad bit of a guilty conscience? Who mentioned race? Try answering those questions before accusing me of playing the race card.
