Lecavalier wants long-term deal

Kent Hughes is watching the changes reshaping the Lightning with interest but not trepidation. The agent for Tampa Bay superstar Vinny Lecavalier said Saturday that he does not expect the upheaval -- Oren Koules' OK Hockey taking ownership and Barry Melrose apparently taking over as coach -- to change the team's commitment to sign his client to a long-term deal. In fact, Hughes said his understanding is the Lightning wants Lecavalier "to finish his career with the organization." Seems like a no-brainer, but it's the first time anyone has said it publicly.

It is a no-brainer but if they don't sign him long term, plenty of teams will.

Come to Montreal. Fulfill your destiny. Don't fight the inevitable.

Shouldn't the article read Tampa wants long-term deal? This olive branch is going to save them millions if they do it right away. Kid wants financial security!

Plus with inflation it only makes sense to do it ASAP.

Lock him up and throw away key.

This guy won't come to Montreal. If he really wanted to come he would have done so as a free agent. He'd rather play where there is absolutely no media pressure, great weather and big dollars.

I'm not blaming him, but I am saying he's not coming to Montreal. Ever.

PopKing: Lecavalier would never play in Montreal. First Gainey will not want him, too expensive and he is french canadian. Himself would not like the pressure of Montreal. But he is the player that reminds me the most of Maurice Richard's attitude and play.

Vinny, Stamkos, St.Louis is a superb core. Once Tampa has its ownership issues finally solved, it will be an attractive place for guys willing to play for a contender

June 1, 2008  09:54 PM ET

A no brainer it is. I'm not sure about Melrose though. Does he have what it takes?

June 1, 2008  10:19 PM ET

I'd be willing to give up a lot to get Vinny. If Tampa lets this guy get away they might as well fold up.

Here is Vancouver's chance.

They tell TB to sign him. Then they give TB Naslund and Luongo for Vinnie and the TB goalie.

Instantly they are way better. And they have more shekels to spend on other players.
