Will Rockies shop Holliday?

These tough times demand difficult decisions. Matt Holliday, on the disabled list, is not the problem, but he won't be the solution. At the end of the 2009 season, Holliday, to twist a phrase from Rockies broadcaster Jeff Kingery, will be gone, and he ain't coming back. This year is over for the Skid Rox. They can't wait for next season to get here. They also can't wait for next season to get nothing in return for the great left fielder. So, Holliday must be traded by July 31 and before it's too late, before he becomes a free agent.

"Trading Holliday is not a popular proposal, and can be argued, but, in my opinion, it's reality, and the right move to make. The ownership cannot afford to tie up $40 million in three position players, and hitters can be found for Coors Field. Ask Dante Bichette"

um- he's NOT Dante Bichett
And it's NOT 10 years ago.....
They CAN sign him as their cornerstone.
Boras CAN be pushed to the side- see Arod-
They just have to not be CHEAP

Unless their scouting system is like the marlins who somehow procure stud after stud from the farm.....they need to KEEP holliday- at all costs

June 1, 2008  10:14 AM ET

yeah, i agree you keep a bat like that.....he's an absolute stud!! this is a team that was in the world series last year.....are they really at a rebuilding stage already?

The Bronx is calling Mr. Holliday.

June 1, 2008  11:17 AM ET

In the game of baseball today, the only loyalty or ambition is to money. Holliday is a great player and he's going to draw down some serious scratch from someone. Guys like Griffey, who took far less than market value to play for the Reds, are few and far between.

June 1, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Keep in mind that Holliday is under contract through 2009 - not '08. There's no rush to trade him.

Wait, wait, hold on Colorado fans. It appears like the NL West is becoming the NL Worst once again. Remember 2005 folks? The season is a marathon and possibly Arizona is in the midst of an eventual injury plague/cold spell too. I'm a Padres fan, and I know SD may be MLB's worst team but I'm holding out a sliver of hope for this division to get even worse. And if any NL West fans should hold this belief, it's Rockies fans after what happened last year.

it would be a shame to see a great player like holliday destroy his career by going there

June 1, 2008  12:26 PM ET

funny where are all these frontrunning rookies fans , funny how they dont exist like before

June 1, 2008  12:31 PM ET

eastcoastkeith their were never rookies fans, i live in colorado last year they came out of the woodwork, now they are gone.

June 1, 2008  02:20 PM ET

phillyfool27, it's Rockies with a capital R (always capitalize proper nouns) not rookies. And while the Phillies are awesome right now and the fans are happy, I wouldn't exactly be ripping Colorado fans. Phillies fans turn on their team quicker than any other team in baseball. I've listened to the WHIP before driving home from Padres wins over the Phillies many an August night...

By the way, Dizzy, I could not agree more.

June 1, 2008  02:38 PM ET

yanks dont need holiday!! the only thing i can see is to get him and trade him to make the yanks bullpen stronger.... and in less time.

June 2, 2008  01:49 AM ET

Winning teams need at least 3 good hitters in the middle and can fill the rerst of the lineup with average hitters with good gloves.

There are really very few great hitters in the majors. Ablbert, Chase Utley, Wright, Arod, Manny, Berkman,

The million dollar question: Is Holiday a great hitter? - IF he is then the Rockies should never give him up.

June 2, 2008  04:33 AM ET

dont trade him rocks

June 2, 2008  07:13 AM ET

We'll take him. What do you want?
