Sources: Sundin skeptical of Leafs

Sources say captain Mats Sundin, who becomes a free agent July 1, left interim Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher "on pins and needles" after their face-to-face meeting late Thursday night, in which he failed to commit to another season with Toronto. The talk among some NHL executives is that Sundin isn't impressed with the fact the Leafs don't have a full-time GM in place, that there's no urgency to hire a coach and nobody is sure what direction the club might take next season.

It looks like Sundin posed for class pictures with Lacavalier. Are they going to be on the same page in the yearbook?

Fletcher should not be on pins & needles at all!
Let this "eggheaded" I want to only play for the Leafs, hypocrite take a long walk south of the Border!
His team leadership is questionable and the new guys need a different energy in the dressing room.
Injuries will continue to be a problem with Mats as the older he gets the shell will crack more easily.
Take the 8 million and spend it wisely Cliff.
Toronto has no further use of this bonehead.

Yeah...all the "I want to remain a Leaf for life" was all bull----.

He played the media and fans like a violin. If he jumps ship for any reason now he is a hypocrite in the largest sense. What is different now than three months ago? Why is his outlook on the Leafs vastly different?

I hope he signs with a "contender" then crashes and burns like Cujo did when he jumped ship for the Red Wings a few years back.

Is it how things are done in Toronto? The guy has been playing 13 seasons for the chronically underachieving organization, earns money below his market value (last contract yielded him only 5.5mln), surpasses a point per game, plays both ends of the ice, wins games all by himself and what he gets in the end is nowhere near respect. Frankly, there should be a monument commemorating his dedication to the Leafs in front of Air Canada Centre.

I know he registered just a single goal in the final 20 games but do you think Leafs were true playoff team? Even if he had scored 20 goals in that span, leafs would've been smashed by their first opponent because of their unreliable defense.

And I don't think he's going anywhere. If he should think differently, I guess Detroit is a probable direction.

Well, Matts, you're skeptical of Leafs. Everyone is skeptical of you by now. Works both ways.

Why would he care about not having a GM or coach in place?? Either way, the Leafs won't be a contender next year. And he didn't want to go to a contender when he had the chance at the trade deadline. So lame.

I'm beginning to think I misjudged Sundin and my faith in human nature will take a bit of a dive if he bails on the Leafs now and proves to be the hypocrite that several of you think he is. I can't make him out at all; why did he stay at the trade deadline if he's thinking of moving now?
