USC's Carroll feels trapped by rule

USC Coach Pete Carroll has complained that the NCAA rule prohibiting contact with recruits in the spring penalizes hard-working head coaches while evening the recruiting field for "lazy" ones. The so-called "Saban Rule" was adopted this year reportedly after Alabama's Nick Saban, another relentless recruiter, was accused of violating NCAA regulations that prohibit in-person contact with high school players during the spring evaluation period. The legislation, sponsored by the Southeastern Conference, sidelines all head coaches from April 15 to the end of May.

Aww.... The mean old NCAA won't let Pete give his recruits free cars

June 1, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Pete doesn't do that. The boosters do just like at OSUck.

Pete is a workaholic and that's why he's a successful coach. I do think the NCAA should give the assistants a two week break.

A better example of boosters taking care of recruiting would've been the Fisher regime at Michigan that brought in Sean Higgins, Glen Rice, The Fab Five, etc...

June 1, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Jaydub, yeah UM got ensnarled with the booster problem with Ed Martin with Webber and Traylor and it destroyed UM's bball program. It no longer happens at UM but doesn't mean it's not going on at other places. Do you know if Rice was part of it? If so, do you have a link to something that exposes that Rice and others than Webber and Traylor were taken care of boosters?
And Fisher wasn't the head coach during the Rice years. It was only the post season play in 89 when Fisher was named interim coach. rice graduated in 89.

there's plenty of copy of OSU players saying point blank that they or others were taken care of Boosters. So it happens everywhere even at Michigan, though I woudl think it doesn't now due to the past problems with basketball.

LMAO. He is against a even playing field??? Too much...Just how many schools does he think can afford to pay their players as much as USC?
Oh, thats right, when he had an even playing field in the NFL he got his
a** kicked. My Bad.

June 1, 2008  01:51 PM ET

Seems he uses his new freed up time complaining. Remember him bellyaching about tactics Krumrie used at the SC pro day?

50yearfan | 06/01/08, 01:48 PM

I agree 50yearfan, when the talent on the opposing team's as fast and athletic as SC's, Pete chokes. Chow's dismissal was pivotal in the sense that SC has yet to develop a rhythm and flow to their offense. Kiffin/ Sarkisian were too busy trying to pad the stats of Leinart & Booty, making themselves look like offensive geniuses in the process. SC lost a few games and a 'ship because of that idiotic paly-calling.

June 1, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Pete can still contact the players agents can't he? Afterall, seems like most are on campus anyways.

June 1, 2008  02:58 PM ET

Get over it, Pete. Everybody else has to suffer, too.

June 1, 2008  05:45 PM ET

Oh..50yrOldFan..you are still alive? Senility has not set in? This rule does not make sense.....if a person want to work hard and work extra hours, so bet it. What he is doing is not really cheating and your comment of "evening the playing field" seem silly. All the coaches has have this same option....he just takes advantage of it. This just rewards the lazy coaches. Of course all of this comes with a LSU connection.

June 1, 2008  06:20 PM ET

Sometimes...I wish this site test for IQ or requires a college education as some of these comment are so stupid. "LSUrocks is on hunger strike", please give me a one example of USC or its booster giving any benefits to its students? Dont even bring up Bush or Mayo....these issues shroud around OUTSIDE agents alledging providing benefits to the athletes, NOT USC. I know you probably cannot comprehend this with your LSU education, but perhaps someone can help him with this.

June 1, 2008  06:25 PM ET

LA Boy...He really should be more concerned about keeping his Booster Club and Alumni group under control. You cannot throw that kind of money around and not get the school in trouble someday.
Now you get to bed, tomorrow is a school day..

June 1, 2008  07:03 PM ET

50yearfan: Can you please Google and send over any articles mentioning any Boosters or Alumni groups involved in this? Before you umake statements like that, please research the topic. The alleged parties involved in the Bush and Mayo involves OUTSIDE people with no relations to the university. With that said.....you never replied to my comments to the new restrictions, This new rule seems silly. The field was already "level", as all coaches has the right to scour the country for talent. Please do me a favor and when you reply, use some common sense and stay on the topic.

Thank you!

June 1, 2008  07:29 PM ET

la boy, it levels the playing field for all 132 teams that play in the upper football level. Being that all budgets are not created equal, this rule favors the haves over the have nots.

That is why that a limit on contact makes sense. It allows Boise State to beat OU, A-State to beat Michigan or UF beat OSU.

June 1, 2008  07:32 PM ET

poor poor pete. screw USC! Go Devils !!!

June 1, 2008  07:46 PM ET

LA Boy..Lighten up, will ya. Jeesh. The schools history of paid players is legendary. Of course the coaches knew nothing about it..Pete is too busy working sooo hard... They are not unique to the big school paid player, but they could be the poster boy for it..
Look,USC has the most talent year in and out of any school in the country. Only the coach holds them back. He is well aware that he needs superior talent to compete. Recruiting is what he does best.
Consider for a moment though that it has gotten a bit out of hand. We have high school juniors and sophomores being romanced by professional salesmen. They are kids. We now have Jr. High students committing orally to colleges in basketball. Enough already.. It is about time the NCAA started to bring some sense to this madness.
Petey might do well do go over the Stanford game films and use the time to figure out a way to beat them. That is if he can get to the film room with all the agents in the locker room..

June 1, 2008  07:48 PM ET

poor poor pete. screw USC! Go Devils !!!

imsjry2 | 06/01/08, 07:32 PM

**** Devils.... they'll lose to all the good teams, like they always do..... what a disgrace they are to the Pac 10.... they actually lower the strength of schedule for the rest of the league when they tank, as always, at the end....

June 1, 2008  07:49 PM ET

LABoy is in denial if he thinks that the problem is because of boosters and agents. Well genius, what coach let these people on the sidelines and at the practices. People are really getting tired of Pete acting like a moron and saying he knows nothing. Either he knew and should be fired or he's and idiot who has no idea that his players are on the dole and should be fired!

June 1, 2008  07:52 PM ET

50 yr fan.... what the **** is your point here.... LA Boy showed your ignorance of the subject, so you start droning on about recruiting younger players and that Pete Carrol is somehow holding back the team? How many coaches would give their left nut to win even one National Championship & Pete's got two and lost another on the last play of the game.... try coming with a little more next time...

June 1, 2008  08:23 PM ET

Sir Robin (as himself) ...Methinks your tights are creeping up on you. Just kidding. But we now know what happened to Pete Carrol's family jewels.
Look, it is no big deal. But to assume he works harder than other coaches is an assumption in this whole article that is impossible to support. And to assume that USC is hurt more by this rule than any other school is baseless. He sounds whiney. I have not heard of other coaches complaining.
Maybe it was only NFL teams he was holding back. He is a great recruiter, shows up on game day with the most talent and wins most of the time. Though I am not sure why Idaho was on the schedule.
you guys can have the last word. Out of here, but will read what you say tomorrow.
