Sakic contemplating retirement

At this moment, Joe Sakic is contemplating whether he should play or retire. Joe still can perform at an extremely high level. Despite missing 38 games the past season because of a hernia, he had 40 points in 44 games -- and likely would have been at 80 over a full regular season. He topped the Avs in playoff points with 10. He scored his (record) eighth overtime game-winning goal. And he was classy and classic until (and after) the Avalanche's rude ending.

I hope he plays one more year.. this is a guy you just can't dislike. Class act, always has, always will be. He is to Avs what Yzerman was/is to the Wings.

Absolutely, it would be a shame if he didn't play anymore, but what a career he's had. One of the greatest shooters and class leaders in the history of the game. First ballot into the Hall

Joe was a fantastic player, a big game player who always played great under pressure. I remember how he dominated at Salt Lake City, clearly Canada's best player on their run to Gold.

He is a legend. A classy player all around. Hope he playes one more season.

say it ain,t so joe.

He's got nothing more to prove. He's been giving his best for a lot of years. I hope he doesn't but, if he walks away, I hope he enjoys his retirement and the fruit of his labors.

Either way, stay or go, thanks, Joe! You are pure class!

One of the best that Joe. Loved this guy. What a beauty eh Gocan?

June 2, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Please don't go, Joe! You can't go out in a season where you missed so much time due to a hernia. That just wouldn't be right. Whatever you decide, you'll always be a hero in CO. We love ya man.

By the way, FN is a little slow. This story was written about a week ago.

one heck of a player and a heck of a class act. I expect to see him next year, truth be told, but if we don't, well the game lost a heck of a guy. The one thing we all know for sure is he won't be pulling the same kind of bulls***t Neidermayer pulled this past season - Joe will play the full season or not at all.

and yes, he was, and is, a Beauty, Bauner

One more season!!

If Super Joe retires, I will be very sad. I grew up watching him play in the league and he was one of my all time favorites. Right after Stevie Y. Joe is a great player, a classy guy, and I think the game will be a little emptier with him gone.

While I want at least one more year from him, I can understand if he wishes to hang up the skates. He's a Hall of Famer in every sense of the word.

Would love to see him come back for one more year, and try to win Stanley again. Like Stevie Yzerman, you got to root for him, great player, he's a class act and doesn't matter if you hate the Avs. Will be happy for him whether he retires or comes back for a year. Definately, will be a Hall of Famer, hope the Avs give him a front office job.
My favorite moment from his career happened in 2001. When he handed the Stanley Cup to Ray Bourque first, to skate with and not the tradition the captain does.

Sakic served as a mentor to Stastny but the latter has become a very reliable player this year. If we consider a plethora of decisions the Avalanche organization has to take (regarding Foote, Forsberg, Liles, Theodore, Svatos and others), it's really difficult to predict at what level the team will compete next year. Though I also reckon last year was nothing near the appropriate farewell to such a classy guy, if the Avalanche do not have enough power to become a serious contender, Joe might find himself retired. I wish I'm wrong.

Maybe this will be the new Forsberg story. Does he go? Does he stay?.....

June 2, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Not many like him left. he really is like another Stevie Y. Pure class. If he does retire, it will be because he doesn't feel like he can perform to his own satisfaction.

You won't see guys like this anymore. Class act all the way. Sure first ballot HOF. I'm a Wings fan but never could hate this guy no matter what. I agree that he won't pull a Ducks move....he'll play the whole season or retire before it.
Great player....great guy....good luck Joe whatever you decide

Even as a Wings fan, Joe Sakic's retirement will be a loss for the NHL. He always played with class. Even during the most heated times in the rivalry he was a respected player.

June 3, 2008  12:55 PM ET

One more Joe, please!!! You were injured every time the Avs played the Coyotes in Phoenix!

June 3, 2008  05:04 PM ET

If Joe Gos, there will only a few classy guys left in the League! And he may be almost 40, but he has a heart of a 18 r old, and the hands of a 25 yr old!

One more year Joe, Bring the cup back to Denver for a bitter sweet ending to your career!

Don't go Joe.
