Bears like Hester's receiving skills

If the Bears' weekend minicamp can be viewed as any indicator of the future, well, Devin Hester someday may be seen similarly among wide receivers. His transition to the position -- at least at this point, before the real artillery starts flying -- has exceeded anybody's highest hopes. ''I have been around a lot of guys, a lot of really good receivers, and he has a chance to be better than all of them,'' said Bears wide receivers coach Darryl Drake, who has worked with Hines Ward and Roy Williams. ''That is a strong statement, but I really believe that."

It is worth a try. There certainly are some openings for players at the WR position.

June 2, 2008  06:46 AM ET

I think they should try this guy on special teams. He might do something.

June 2, 2008  07:13 AM ET

if he can catch he will be great

June 2, 2008  07:43 AM ET

Hey dumb dumbs he already played WR last year. This is not a new experiment.

June 2, 2008  08:16 AM ET

yup he had 20 catches last season for 300 yards with 2 TDs. if chicago had a qb, hester could double those numbers easy.

June 2, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Hester needs to stay at KR/PR Primary weapon on special teams.

June 2, 2008  09:29 AM ET

He is a game changer as a returner. Using him as an occasional receiver is OK, but I think they will take his edge off if they use him to much in that role.

June 2, 2008  09:59 AM ET

He dropped some balls last season when they put him at WR, I guess he must have been working on his hands.

June 2, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Are they ever gonna use that Urlacher guy on defense? He should be tried, too.

June 2, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Are they just waking up to the fact that the man is good? He is pure talent, David Hester is. Just give him the cape with the S on the chest and I bet he can even replace Urlacher ....! Uhmmm. I don't think I want to find out if he can!

Only in Chicago it takes management 2 years to find out a player has talent and 5 years to find out a player doesn't!

June 2, 2008  10:08 AM ET

That's because they were stuck on stupid, BobSaget. The man can run like a gazelle but they kept throwing him those awful lateral passes. Every time he took of down the field and the QB was able to throw a ball that traveled faster tan him, he did good!

June 2, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I hope Marty Booker will be able to replace Moose and show Devin where to properly line-up. That was what Moose did best.

June 2, 2008  10:13 AM ET

And that Rex guy ain't the best QB that gets paid for doin' it. I hope they up and notice that before too long,...

June 2, 2008  10:58 AM ET

yeah, now if they can get somebody to throw him the ball the bears might have something.

June 2, 2008  11:12 AM ET

They liked his receiving skills when they drafted him but he couldn't read a playbook.

June 2, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Hester is not a talented receiver. He was wide open last year, the Qb laid it right out to him who had separated well from the defender and it went through his arms. What Hester has is speed and innate talent as to open field running; what he seems to lack are discipline and concentration, which are both needed for WR. Maybe he;ll improve. I wouldn't bet on it.

June 2, 2008  11:44 AM ET

As long as WR play time does not diminsh his dynamite skills on the return game, good for him.

It's too bad though that he doesn't have a quarter back to throw to him though...

June 2, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Watson, you're being a dumb**** again. Every receiver drops passes. It's inevitable. Look at TO, who led the league last year in drops. Geez...idiot

June 2, 2008  01:37 PM ET

The guy hasn't shown the hands to be a full time WR just yet, not in the NFL. He might develop them, yes. But not yet. He didn't have good hands in college either. Shoot he fumbles quite a bit at the one job he has, as a returner. But he is electric once the ball is in his hands.

And he needs to learn the playbook. How many times he line up wrong last year? It takes full time WRs 3 years before they develop, if they are serious about using Hester in more than just a cursory or supplemental WR role, they better get to working.

if he becomes a starting wr, it will diminish his impact as a kr/pr. just look @ dante hall. so he would need to choose wr or kr/pr, but if he did both he would not be amazing at both, but if he choose one, he could be amazing at it. hes an amazing kr/pr already after 2 years, and i think that given a little training he could be an amazing wr
