Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi, 63, has two years remaining on his contract, which he intends to fulfill. It will be interesting to see whether Notre Dame has any interest in Maturi, who is a Notre Dame grad, following Saturday's departure of AD Kevin White to Duke.

Why would anyone consider bringing in the man who fired Glen Mason? During his tenure at Minnesota, Mason was consistently one of the top two coaches in the Big Ten. He is more with less than any coach I have seen.

"Glen Mason top two coaches in Big Ten"

I have a hard time believing one of the top two coaches in the big ten could never do any better than a tie for 4th place in the conference.

ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, urp (excuse me) ha-ha-ha-ha

King, we are talking about Minnesota here. What Glen Mason did was nothing short of phenomenal. Raising the Gophers performance to the level he did and maintaining it for as long as he did is remarkable. It is comparable to Steve Spurrier winning at Duke or Gary Barnett taking the Wildcats to the Rose Bowl. He simply was one of the top two coaches in the Big Ten, period. How many coaches could pull off what he did with a few marginal players and a couple of good running backs. Everyone knew what was coming and nobody could stop it.

Mason=Bum Status lol all of minnesota knows it get a grip

I wonder if he is good flipping burgers, Charlie Weis likes cheese burgers and is real good at loosing to USC.

June 2, 2008  10:18 PM ET

In Weiss's defense, his Irish team actually won the 2005 battle but the Pac-10 officials decided that USC should win.

get off the weight jokes already, losers. LF must have graduated from USC. He can't even spell "losing" right. "Loosing"?

"Everyone knew what was coming and nobody could stop it."

Not really. When it mattered most the running game was often stopped. For one, you don't blow a 31 point lead late in the third quarter if you're able to run the ball without being stopped. 2005 against Wisconsin they needed to run out 1:51 on the clock to win the game but couldn't get a first down. Good coaches don't have that many collapses. And what Mason does was nothing like what Spurrier did at Duke and Barnett did at Northwestern. Those places are harder to win at, and those coaches actually won there. If Mason had been one of the top coaches in the Big Ten he'd be coaching again by now. No one has even expressed serious interest in him for job openings.

Mason did good considering he had to recruit players to the Metrodome off campus.

Minnesota has six football national titles. Someone must have won there.
