N.Y. Times rips EliteXC on CBS

The production team behind CBS's broadcast of the EliteXC circus Saturday night must have believed that high-voltage hyperbole was the route to success for the first live network prime-time showing of a mixed martial arts show. The announcers -- Gus Johnson and Mauro Ranallo, in particular, and Frank Shamrock -- usually sounded like teenagers besotted by the brutality that fists, elbows, forearms, knees and feet can inflict. But if the action is compelling enough and if M.M.A. truly is the world's fast-growing sport (Johnson's claim), why did the three sound like such in-house lackeys? The announcers could not mask the reality that these fights are ugly, sanguinary events or that the multiple disciplines in mixed martial arts render each bout a laboratory in brutality. The CBS threesome was unfazed by their de rigeur citations of guillotine chokes, crucifix holds and kidney kicks; Johnson passed them off as being artistic, violent and cerebral expressions of the sport. Maybe I'm too used to boxing, but M.M.A. seems more violent. Boxers have died. A death in the cage is almost certain.

MMA isn't more violent than boxing.

Apart from that, this EliteXC event may turn, in fact, to be bad for the sport :(

The "OFF" or "CHANNEL" button on the remote will eliminate this as an issue for anyone who views it as one!

MMA, Extreme fighting, EliteXC...it's all trailer park ****...the successor to WWF and wrestling. Bread and circuses for the masses...looks good on the 50" widescreen in the doublewide.

Wasn't Michael Vick into this ****, too?

An 85 year old Editor from the NY Times gets his panties in a twist because he thinks a choke hold is more dangerous than 45 minutes of punches to the kidney.

Congrats sir, you have just lost your grip on journalistic perspective.

Crazy

June 3, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Kimbo Slice is a waste of time. Just a Tank Abbott of a different color. Pretty sad when the top fight was a pair of women and the draw was to see if they could actualy tear it up. For this to be primetimes venture into MMA was stupid. The only good thing is that people didn't get ripped off 49.95 to see Kimbo blob around the ring and throw haymakers. Knowing this was supposed to be MMA's big break into primetime and to the large market...I think they shot themselves in the foot.

How could this have been MMAs big break when its been coming on Spike and Versus forever. Everyone that had an inkling of interest has already seen lots of free MMA.

This sport is very entertaining. However it does have an amateur feel that is reflected in the main fight with Kimbo Slice. This prime time MMA exhibition was justified however by the title fight between Lawler and Smith both of them demonstrating sterling professionalism and sportsmanship.

Field, I believe taking repeated shots to the head and body for 10 rounds do more damage to someone than 4-5 hits with the smaller gloves. There is no standing 8 count in MMA either. If you go down, then the fight is over. They don't give you 10 seconds to recover and take another beating. If that's no proof enough have you ever seen an old boxer who spoke clearly? Repeated shots to the head cause damage to the brain. A lof of MMA fights also end when one fighter taps out. I've never seen a boxing match where anyone can tap out. Submissions are as much, if not more, a part of MMA as knockouts.

June 3, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Almost every boxer who has boxed for a long time has brain trauma, or lives a short life. it's very sad, but there are many many examples of this.

The innovaters of MMA (Tank Abbot, ken shamrock, etc etc) at least still have their minds (well as much as they ever had).

MMA is more entertaining and appears more violent because there is more blood, but people will tap before their arm breaks in an armbar, and maintainng the health of the fighters is the most important thing in MMA. Like it or not, the Kimbo fight was stopped because someone's ear was bleeding. Definetely not a rason to stop a fight, and be it shady or not, the fight was still stopped. We talking about 3-5 rounds of fighting where punching and kicking is only half of the battle, whereas boxing is constant punching to the skull.

The chick fight was by far the only good one. I'd let Gina throw me around a bit.

June 3, 2008  10:26 AM ET

MMA less violent than boxing... that is a joke right??? I like to watch it but clearly it is more violent. Clearly Slice would be a solid boxer but his lack of some talent all around for MMA will cost him. He will learn but you can only learn so much at his age.

June 3, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Field, no argument that an elbow or kicks are worse than anything a boxing glove can do. Even teh gloves they wear in MMA yield a more violent punch. But the end result if the fighter taking less punishment. Wht is better to take 20-30 punches in an MMA fight or 200-300 in a boxing match?

Saying it is more violent is a how you define violent. Both ports are violent. MMA leads to more dramatic KO's, but I believe that boxing in the end is worse for the human body.

June 3, 2008  10:50 AM ET

and so did Jim Rome, and so did Dennis Miller, and so did a bunch of local talk radio shows... basically the only person I saw stand up for this whole thing is Collin Cowherd.

June 3, 2008  10:53 AM ET

It is a shame that the WEC event this weekend isn't the event that was on CBS instead of EliteXC.

June 3, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Atleast it was something to watch.

June 3, 2008  11:08 AM ET

I should have caught the Law and Order reruns than waste the time on this. I bought into the Kimbo internet hype and honestly can't wait to see him go up against someone that is gonna hospitalize him. Being a hard puncher only will get you worked in the MMA...there is so much more these guys can dish out that Kimbo is not even close to prepared for.

first of all, that garbage that was shown on CBS SHOULD NOT represent what people think of when they think of Mixed Martial Arts. I'll agree with Jason that the WEC fights on sunday we're amazing, especially the Yoshiro Maeda vs Miguel Torres fight.

If you want a good example of what REAL MMA talent is (not this Kimbo Slice garbage) watch this fight: http://www.mmatko.com/yoshiro-maeda-vs-miguel-torres-fight-video -wec-34/

These are some of the best athletes in the world, who train just as hard if not harder than any NFL, NBA player or boxer, and they go out and give their all for the crowd. People like Kimbo are a GROSS misinterpretation of what MMA really is.
