Rangers weighing Jagr, Avery offers

The acquisitions of Jaromir Jagr and Sean Avery have been the masterstroke personnel moves of Glen Sather's eight-year tenure as the Rangers' general manager. Sather now has four weeks, at most, to decide whether either or both players have run their course in New York. Sather told the Daily News yesterday that while he would like to re-sign both Jagr and Avery, he wasn't about to wreck the Rangers' salary structure to keep them from becoming unrestricted free agents on July 1.

Doesnt that **** Avery want like $4 mil a year or sumthing ...?

June 3, 2008  07:57 AM ET

By "weighing" I guess they mean that they will sign those guys if the price for them isn't too high. While I agree with this course of action, for the most part, it is certainly a different way to go at things. I mean, the Wings sign guys like Lidstrom and Draper and Cleary to hometown discount contracts, as everyone knows. But the organization doesn't just come out and publicly expect it, which is what the Rangers are doing. There is a difference between guys CHOOSING to stay with a team for less, and guys being forced to take less if they want to stay

Slither releases this to keep anyone in his market from noticing the Cup. The world will not breathe till this is cleared up.

Give Jagr 2 years at 4-5 million a year. As much as i like Avery they cant pay him anything over about 2.5. Thats money better spent on a younger forward with a chance to develop. This years playoffs prove that you just dont have enough room for a guy like that when it gets down to the nitty gritty. To go far you need 4 good lines...Rangers have a decent core and some good up and coming youngsters. B bye Sean.....

Avery is not going to get the $4 mil he wants but he'll get more then the 2.75 the Rangers were offering. For what ever reason the teams record with Avery in the line up and without is night and day. The Ranger fans also love him. He needs to take a bit less then he wants and realize he'll make more $ in endorsements in NY then he will anywhere else. The angers also need to realize the Avery jersey is a huge seller.

do it.

June 3, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I'm still holding out hope for Hossa to the Bruins. I think he may demand less.

June 3, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Jagr: $2.5 mil plus incentives on performance.
Avery $1.1 mil
NOT MORE or UFA and good luck. Or Russia....

June 3, 2008  01:44 PM ET

I've got a feeling Jagr is still going to demand big money. At least $5mm/yr. He was the leading scorer in the entire playoffs until the Rangers were knocked out! If nobody pays up, he'll probably just go over to Europe and collect his due.

Avery is a turd.

June 3, 2008  03:54 PM ET

He said "turd".................

June 3, 2008  04:15 PM ET

Maybe the bruins should sign Kimbo Slice... anyway I think that with free agency around the corner the bruins will be signing cheaper players and getting rid of more established ones to make room for another big name. I just have a feeling and I'm usually wrong though but I think that they will have to do something to stop being the bass-tard son of Boston sports. Is **** censored?

June 3, 2008  04:16 PM ET

yes... yes it is. and that's why I wrote Bass-tard.

June 3, 2008  09:23 PM ET

Time to sign them both.

June 4, 2008  12:46 AM ET

he'll probably just go over to Europe and collect his due.

Avery is a turd.

If Jags does go to Russia to play he is a turd too. He's 36 and has 1599 career points. If he plays for 4 more years and averages 75 points per season he passes Messier for 2nd all-time scoring.

jagar sucked during the regular season, once his butt was on the line he picked it up, avery skated hard and was a leading scorer despite the fact he missed like 20 plus games this season.... averys merchandise sells more then any one elses, reality check, malik was making was making more than avery this season... he should come back and should get a raise its simple...
