Whispers of Cards QB battle

Matt Leinart is still penciled in as the Cardinals' starting quarterback. But remember, most pencils have erasers, too. That's why when Ken Whisenhunt was asked to reiterate who his No. 1 quarterback will be when the Cardinals show up at training camp sometime next month, the head coach tried to be as politically correct as possible. Yes, he said, Leinart's the man. But he quickly added that veteran Kurt Warner would be right there with him, ready to assume duties at any given moment. Whispers made their way around the team's training facility one day last week when, during workouts, Whisenhunt had Warner running mostly with the first-team offense in drills. But he did the same thing a year ago and said the practice is routine. It gives both quarterbacks the chance to work with certain players and establish some chemistry. Leinart, who spent most of Monday working with the first-team unit on passing drills, said he had no problem with alternating time with Warner in workouts.

Kurt Warner is like a bad VD, he'll flare up every now and again but if you take your valtrex you can keep it under control. Ask Micheal Vic....err Ron Mexico.

I don't think that a team can really have a QB controversy when the season is still 3-4 months away. Of course Warner is going to get reps with the First Team. He's a veteran who got tons of playing time over the last couple of years.

If you're a head coach with half-a-brain, of course you are going to "remind" Leinert that the team can get along without him. He's barely played so far and there are legit concerns about his dedication.

Man...keep all Cards fans away from rope, guns, and deadly prescriptions.

I mean..what does it say about your season when your QB controversy is brewing over a has been, and a never will be?

WOW, Most pencils have erasers. Thanks story.

Warner can still play. If he'd played as well in his first year with the Cards as he did last year, they never would have drafted Leinhart. Let's be honest, the guy is still very good. He played injured last year and still had Pro-Bowl numbers (Jeff Garcia making it over Warner and Brees was a joke). Cards fans shouldn't be worried, if Leinhart falters, they'll have a more than capable guy to back him up.

if matt spent more time studying the play books and less partying, he wouldn't feel the heat from the vet qb.

Could I get a translator?

June 3, 2008  11:48 AM ET

they should start Warner and keep Leinart as the backup. With the 2 stud WRs, at least go with the guy that can get them the ball.

Leinart's partying has nothing to do with his lack of success thus far. It's his lack of talent. Go do beer bongs and keep the bench warm.

QB Battle... Who cares? The Cardinals can put any one of them back there and they'll still be the same Cardinals. The most game they'll win is 8 and that's it. Seattle owns the west and we will continue to own the west until proven otherwise. Better go get Jake Plummer back to have any shot at making the playoffs again. This T&R is a joke!

"pw there is nothing wrong with Matt having fun. I know plenty of QBs that go out to have fun and still get their work done. Look at Brett Favre in his early years. Big Ben is partier and no one says anything. Stop being feed stupid media crap and believing it."

i believe in stats. not emotional conclusions.
2nd yr team cmp% yards avg td int rating
2007 Arizona Cardinals 53.6 647 5.8 2 4 61.9
1992 Green Bay Packers 64.1 3,227 6.9 18 13 85.3

i watched the 1st game favre broke out in, was against the cincy bengals when don majkowski got knocked out of the game. comparing favre to leinart is absurdity.

and if you are saying other players party, yes they do. the ones that get their jobs done, keep their jobs. the ones that dont end up selling cars or playing in the cfl.

Warner to take over by week 4.

June 3, 2008  04:05 PM ET

Matt is a bum he just like jive said Warner will be the starter by week 4 if that...pick up cullpeper form the free agency instead u saw what he did when he had moss, the cardinals got fitzgerald and boldwin he was a bum at oakland because he had no one to throw it to and miami.......

June 3, 2008  05:41 PM ET

Both are going to busted up at some point in the season anyway. Who is the third string guy? That is the question

June 3, 2008  06:48 PM ET

I can't get too "emotional" over Leinhart or Warner. God bless whoever starts !!!

June 3, 2008  09:46 PM ET

Warner and Leinhart armed wrestled to see who would pour Pabst Blue Ribbon down the beer bong!

June 4, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Warner is a class act who plays well (usually). Leinart is an unproven me-first punk. This QB job should be wide open.
-Cardinals fan.

June 5, 2008  02:06 PM ET

Warner should be the starter based on performance, until Leinart proves he is ready to handle the responsibility and lead the team. The rest of the Cardinal offense appears to have much more confidence in Warner than they do in Leinart, and that is a big part of the battle right there. Leinart needs to win that confidence with his offense. If the Cards were terrible and headed for a 3-13 type season, then I would say play Leinart and let him build that trust.....but this team has legitimate playoffs possibilities, and I think Warner gives them the best chance to win, especially early in the season.

The cards are just a bad football team that moved from St. Louis to Arizona. It doesn't matter WHO the quarterback is there, they are not going anywhere.
