Hurricanes looking for offense

While it appears increasingly unlikely that the Canes will re-sign Bret Hedican even as Hedican is considering playing another season in the NHL, they're still waiting for a decision from Glen Wesley whether he plans to return. Wesley said last week he had "no update" on his status. Nevertheless, after the successful trade for Joe Corvo last February, Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford would like to add another offensive-minded defenseman, whether through the free-agent market or by trading from Carolina's surplus of forwards. Whom to pursue and what to offer will be on the agenda as assistant general manager Ron Francis, pro scouting director Marshall Johnston and Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette, among others, meet this week.

Canes suck!

June 3, 2008  08:30 AM ET

The Canes need to do something. These last two years have been painful to watch as the playoffs slip away from them at the end. Annoying...

June 3, 2008  10:36 AM ET

they had better do something serious or all the Fairweather Fans in Carolina are going to move on and put this team in financial trouble again!

June 3, 2008  11:08 AM ET

The Canes were doing good all year, till Washington went on that unbelievable tear.37-17-7 tear. Didnt the Canes choke on their last game?Against a team they owned all year? I forget that team....but the Canes will make the play-offs again with a healthy Brind'a'mour in the line-up. Just hope he has fully healed.

Good, hockey doesn't belong in Carolina...

June 3, 2008  12:24 PM ET

I'd hate to see him go, but Erik Cole needs a change of scenery.

June 3, 2008  12:50 PM ET

"hockey doesn't belong in Carolina..."
And you, Spiny Norman - whatever that means. Don't belong here so go home, grab a beer and get smashed. We care about hockey only here - not anger.

June 3, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Erik Cole needs a change of scenery? Really? I hope the B's make a move then. I'd love to see that guy playing with Savard. I wonder who they'd want from the B's for him?

June 3, 2008  01:16 PM ET

I think Wesley will hang them up. Last true Whaler on the team. Now I can completely hate them.

It wasn't anger, so get a grip. I was alluding to hockey, a sport not normally associated with the Southeastern United States. I If you'd like to debate hockey, or for that matter...ANYTHING else, I'll be glad to oblige, and I'll be sure to keep the references easy for you, since my musings aren't clear enough for you.
If you'd like anger, I can certainly show you some, but a wise man once said never argue with an idiot, they have nothing to lose, so I won't bother
As far as the moniker, well, you'll just have to get someone to help you google the name or something like that.

June 3, 2008  03:15 PM ET

Well said Spiny One.

June 3, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Spiny, by your rationale then Toronto doesn't deserve the Raptors, or the inevitable move of the Bills to Toronto, what about the Blue Jays while we're at it. I don't think the geographic location of a team is a representation of whether the city 'deserves it' or not. We understand here in Carolina the bitterness of the Whalers leaving to the South, however to call us 'fairweather fans' is innacurate.

There is a rabid following of the Canes and the influx of northerners into the triangle area of this state has helped hockey flourish. If you go to a Canes game you'll see that our fans love this game and love this team. I have all the respect for the Canadian teams and love that we have had the opportunity to watch some of the best players come into the RBC center. Last time I checked out of the entire Southeastern division the one team that had a constant fan base were the Canes, even the Caps with Ovechkin only got attendance when it seems they would make the playoffs.

As for the Canes, yes we did collapse, but that was due to Staal being forced into a leadership role he wasn't ready for. When Brind'Amour went down there was no-one around to fill those mighty big skates. We have alot of good, young talent in Albany and I think the Canes will take back the Southeastern crown and we can prove again that we are the most underestimated team in the league.

James,
A few points.
1) Two of my oldest friends live in Carolina, so certainly not a slight on the state. My point was, that hockey down south (and that includes Washington DC too!) makes as much sense as baseball in Italian
2) I never mentioned the collapse, by the way. I have no beef with the Canes' roster either. One of my favorite all time players played there (Arturs Irbe)
I don't think I ever uused the word "deserved", I said "belong". I also never said anything about "fairweather fans". I do remember a local calling it "Nascar on Skates", which should tell you something.
The Bills will never move to Toronto, (what happened to the Artgos?) That would be like Adeliede fom the AFL moving here. (forgive my spelling)

June 3, 2008  05:02 PM ET

devils could use cole....send him our way (for really cheap while your at it)

June 3, 2008  05:27 PM ET

None of my ire was directed towards you. It just becomes difficult to be a fan of a team that you continually have to justify their existence.

My mentioning of the Canes collapse wasn't directed towards you, I kind of refocused my comment to the story itself.

Lastly, I think the Bills will end up in LA or Toronto. It will remove another piece of the soul of the NFL, but they'll go where the money is and the exhibition games will show that Canada is ready for tis first NFL team.

hedican's like what? in his late 30's? i guess the canes want younger talent

??? You???re right ! Why, weuns didn???t even know what ice wuz ???til that danged ol??? hockie team came here . I would like to say that nothing but curling belongs up north . By the way ??? Italian is not a place .

I wonder who they'd want from the B's for him?
-bostongm

No one .

Last true Whaler on the team. Now I can completely hate them.
-Whalers

Get a life . You are a beautiful part of our hockey heritage in Carolina ! We look up to you ! We admire those years ! I see many Whalers jerseys and hats at Hurricanes games . I have a couple whalers pins and I???ve never even been to Hartford . You hate OUR (yours and ours) team ? Let go of the hate ??? just let it go !

-James the Aussie

James,
If you???re going to try to defend the team, please get your facts straight . Staal played much better hockey after Brind???Amour was injured than he did down the stretch . So did the rest of the team on average . The Hurricanes had started a run of their own just before Brind???Amour???s injury ??? going 15-9-0 in their last 24 from the night of Brindy???s ACL tear. Their fourth game out they lost at the Lightning and in their final game, a too-late- comeback came up short at home vs. the Panthers (of all teams) who played an excellent spoiler game . The issue in those final games may have been the wholesale substitution of several of the injured star players back into the lineup, for some of the AHL call-ups .
