How much is McBride worth?

08:16 AM ET 06.03 | The Chicago Fire is enjoying a dream start to the season, is leading the Eastern Conference and is doing so with an impressive wealth of talent on a deep and balanced team. With that all in mind, how much should the Fire give up to acquire former U.S. national team star Brian McBride? The former Fulham captain is ready to return to MLS and wants to play for the Fire, but the Fire will have to make at least one deal to make that happen. There is no question that if Chicago could add McBride without giving anything up you could install the Fire as MLS Cup favorites today (actually, you could probably say it anyway.) Unfortunately for the Fire, acquiring McBride isn't going to come cheap and team officials will have to decide whether adding McBride is worth shaking up team on a roll right now.

I wouldn't make the deal if it were up to me. They are playing too well right now to risk damaging team chemistry by acquiring a player they don't really need. Blanco was brought in to attract fans and also to help groom younger players. Let him do that. Let him show the strikers what a middie with great vision can do for your goal scoring. Let him show the young midfielders how to position themselves, how to hold possession and distribute the ball.

It has nothing to do with money, "I is the man." Toronto owns McBrides rights, so Chicago would have to give up a key piece of their lineup to obtain McBride. That being said, McBride doesn't fit very well into Toronto's lineup, so it's possible that he could be had for a bit of a discount

Toronto owns his right? How did that happened? I thought Columbus did?

McBride won't be pushing for the maximum. Just a good salary. No millions involved.

Yeah I agree D-Wreck, I don't think he is asking for too much. But I guess we have to wait and see.

this is KILLING me as a Columbus Crew fan. We loved McBride before anyone outside of Bloomington (where he played college soccer) knew who the hell he was. I remember attending opening night way back in 1996 and McBride came out of nowhere to score an amazing goal from outside the box and generally kick DC United **** (remember DC sucked at the very beginning of MLS until Arena completely retooled the team).
I am very disappointed that McBride doesn't seem to care to return to the Crew.

Sorry Fez, but McBride didn't play college soccer in Bloomington. He went to St Louis Univ which is in St Louis. But hey, at least you remember opening night. Don't take it personal. The MLS is a business just like the NBA, NFL and the Premier League.

Brian McBride is the striker the Fire have needed since Damani Ralph went to Russia.
I can't see where we couldn't deal a semi-effective Chad Barrett, someone like Logan Pause and other lesser players/considerations for that allocation... Would make a lot of sense to me.

McBride isn't under contract so MLS doesn't have to pay a transfer fee, so don't worry about your $15 millions.
I don't see McBride pulling down more $900,000. He has aready stated that he wants to return to the USA, Toronto has his rights, so its not like he will be able to create a bidding war between MLS and another team outside the league, just teams within MLS that have a DP slot and the $$ to spend. That leaves a rather short list.

McBride won't be disrupting team chemistry by putting Chad "I can't score but I'm a forward" Barrett on the bench. Chicago are winning in spite of Barrett, bench him for McBride and win the MLS Cup already!

My god where to begin...
@I is the man: he is free, no transfer needed.
re: salary: if Chicago is in the process of haggling for the allocation slot, then he clearly isn't going to be asking for DP money since if he was coming on as a DP there would be no need to get the top allocation slot which would mean there were at least 5 teams Chicago could negotiate with.
@Fez: can you really blame him for wanting to return to his HOME and play his last 2 years by his family and friends? Let's face it, if MLS was set up like most every other league where players can go where they want, he probably would have started out in Chicago.
re Chemistry: Chicago have a LOT of depth (even by MLS standards) trading away the 12th or 13th man off the bech for a RELIABLE finisher won't hurt chemistry . If anything his presence will increase leadership and scoring will go way up.

The MLS needs McBride to come back. How will soccer grow in the United States if all our best players don't even play in the U.S.? Screw team chemistry and all that, they are big boys, then can figure their team chemistry out. Right now it is about building the sport, turning the U.S. (a powerhouse in everything else) into a soccer powerhouse as well. I dare you to disagree.
