Will Ravens extend Lewis?

In a week or two, we could be hearing some news about the team's negotiations with veteran star linebacker Ray Lewis. There has been some movement on both sides, and it's getting close to the point where it's either going to get done, or it's over for a while. The Ravens want to treat Lewis well because of what he has done for this franchise, but they can't afford to overpay a player entering his 13th season. There has been no progress in the talks with Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs. The two sides aren't even talking right now.

Ray Lewis is the heart and soul of that defense. They will come to some sort of a deal but I think both sides need to be realistic that Ray's more dominant and productive years are most likely behind him.

He still has that aura and can keep players jacked up and motivated which is an intangible that they can't pass up.

In their prime, that defense was great. If they could have found a qb, they could have won another Super Bowl...

...or else.

June 4, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Is the team negotiating with him? Or is it more of a plea bargain?

June 4, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Hey! A bandwagon jumper! I bet you were at all the home games during the season right?

June 4, 2008  10:40 AM ET

jj730, couldn't have said it better myself man.

and on the other hand, AGStrange can never let the SB CRUSHING the Ravens put on the Giants go.

Dude, like i've said 100 times. You got your ring last season, beating the Pats in grand fashion, just let it go and breath man, seriously...

June 4, 2008  10:53 AM ET

oh, almost forgot, arsenal69, i agree 100% man.

June 4, 2008  11:24 AM ET

the dude is only 33....33! Look at Seau's old ass still playin. Give the man 4 or 5 more years. ****...make him a player/coach!

June 4, 2008  12:23 PM ET

It's not that the Ravens don't want to keep him, it's that Lewis wants $10 mill/year,

June 4, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Tough one. He's productive...but 10 mil? His agent is telling him some serious lies right now. With more to re-sign than just him, and no cap room for that kind of deal...he should do the classy thing and sign a cap friendly contract. Maybe he can retire as a Raven, and leave with a legacy that falls closer to "team player" rather than "murder suspect".

+1. Even though Ray Lewis might not be as dominant in the gaps as he used to be, his ability to motivate his teammates and the unparalleled passion he brings to the game every single Sunday is more than enough to keep him around.

Isn't this the feller that was involved in a double murder a few years back?

June 4, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Lewis has lost a step in his play but he still is one of the best in the game. As for Suggs I think they don't want to overpay him because they judge his success more as being a part of the system they got there. Look at who he lines up with. Same sort of thing with Briggs in Chicago.

Wisdom from Rafe Hollister | 06/04/08, 02:27 PM

Never proven. Read the article about him last year in SI. They discuss the situation. He had no part in it and the family of the victims believe him now. He was more of a high profile scapegoat on the part of the police back then.

c note, couldn't have said it better myself about Ray !!!

June 4, 2008  02:55 PM ET

thanatos & wisdom: get over it, he was not involved in the murder, it was his friends at the time who actually did it. this story is 8 years old now, it's time to move on...

Thanks. I really buy into this change that we have seen in him. I may be a bit naive when it comes to certain things but what he said in the article resonates that he is a changed man. Besides who are we to judge whether or not he has.

i see yet another who knows no facts about the actual case has spoken.
and, ray rarely gets sacks, shows how much you know on both legal and sports levels...

his FRIENDS at the time ALLEGEDLY stabbed 2 men.

"Didn't this guy have someone murdered' ---> what a joke, you're clueless and this statement proves it.

I went back and read the artcile on Ray Lewis. It is in the Nov. 13, 2006 issue of SI. It says that on the night of Jan 31, 2000 he and a group of guys were involved in an altercation with another group of people outside a club in Atlanta. Two men from that group ended up stabbed and Ray Lewis's limo was shot at leaving the scene. The DA and not the cops tried to get him for the murder of those two but in the end the charges did not stick because there was no evidence. He did plead guilty to obstruction of justice in not giving up the names of the two killers and served one year of probation.
