Pistons next coach will be...

Michael Curry is the heavy favorite to be the next coach. This does not mean it's a done deal. It definitely won't happen this week. Dumars will talk to Pistons assistant Terry Porter, the former Milwaukee head coach, and former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, a fellow Louisianan who is interested in the job. But the job clearly is Curry's to lose, and he is unlikely to lose it.

Avery Johnson

I think Curry might allow Dumars to be a coach from the box.

Can make it to the playoffs but not win big games? A smooth transition...

June 4, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Curry will be the good guy who does what Dumars wants...and be the fall guy when he can't get the players to play for him.

Need to go outside and hire someone big and bad to handle this group of players. Someone who treats them all like you know what. Too bad Parcells doesn't coach basketball!

Avery Johnson would take the Pistons back to what made them successful in the 1st place. Defense.

June 4, 2008  01:11 PM ET

Avery reportedly has had trouble comunnicating with players off court, which translated into a lack of trust on court. They basically stopped listening to him.

That doesn't bode well for a coach of a team like the Pistons. They would rebel against him and get him fired. . . again.

June 4, 2008  01:31 PM ET

yea avery johnson, i don't know why the knicks didn't make an offer for that guy. that's what i'm talkin bout somebody willing to focus on defending.

Avery just needed more time and im sure haven Marc Cuban breathing down your neck wasn good either. Dallas was a learning experience. i think he is man enough to learn from mistakes and make the changes neccesary, besides I rather him go to the east than end up going to PHX or DEN and lighting the defensive fire under them. Can you imagin Amare playing actual defense w/Shaq talk about tough times in the paint.

I would love to see Joe take this job. I honestly believe he could be a heck of a coach. But Curry can get the job done.

June 4, 2008  04:24 PM ET

The Pistons don't need a buddy like Michael Curry being their head coach they need a coach that the young guys can learn from and the veterns respect... Avery Johnson over Mike Curry... and nobody bring up Lord Thomas the III

June 4, 2008  06:36 PM ET

WHAT BETTER CHOICE THEH ISIAH THOMAS -"I'm coming home" !!!

June 4, 2008  07:13 PM ET

no way

June 4, 2008  07:22 PM ET

Someone let Dumars know veteran teams with no fire need veteran coaches with fire. Anyone else gets tuned out.

June 4, 2008  09:24 PM ET

Cel and KnowUrRole - You're way off base on this one.
Petey024 hit the nail on the head.
Avery Johnson has better options than to go to a franchise that has often been a tough coaching environment, and where players feel they have the right to "tune out" their coach (and where certain players, like Rasheed, need to "be tamed").
Don't forget that Avery has the option of collecting four million dollars from Cuban just for kicking back the next year.
Avery would be better suited to stay in the Western Conference. He can merely wait until more coaching opportunities open up, and they probably will within the next year.

Some people mentioned Isiah Thomas.
Since Isiah is already a legend with the Pistons, why not give him a try?
After all, he has had some hard times at other places, so maybe he needs a chance with his "alma mater" team.

Jay L.

He did have hard times, he did a lousy job, he sucked!

Which is exactly the reason the Pistons should stay away. Besides he and Joe Dumars were never "friends".
