Babcock rips Game 5 officiating

After a week of listening to Penguins coach Michel Therrien accuse the Red Wings of obstructing, Mike Babcock allowed a rare burst of emotion. Babcock addressed two situations that occurred during Game 5. The Wings lost Monday, 4-3, when Petr Sykora scored during a power play at 9:57 of triple overtime. That particular man-advantage opportunity came about because Jiri Hudler high-sticked Pittsburgh defenseman Rob Scuderi, earning an automatic four minutes because blood was drawn. The call was black and white in its clarity. It was the two goalie interference calls the Wings were forced to kill off, one each during the fourth and fifth periods, which they said fell into a gray area. "I think it's pretty evident they don't care what I think, either," Babcock said. He then brought up the NHL's desire for more offense, questioning whether the rules instituted three years ago encourage or undermine that notion. "I'll jump on the soapbox," Babcock said. "We talk about scoring more goals in the National Hockey League -- we want more goals. No they don't -- don't tell me that."

Can't comment on the "goalie interference" calls as I am not 100% sure of the rule (thought I was but now I'm not sure...) but if both coaches have been questioning calls (and MANY other coaches that have been in this play-off) then the Powers-That-Think-They-Be better wake up and do something about this.

I also realize there is gamesmanship going on. It's NOT "whining" as many of you have overused the term.....THAT is what a SMART coach does...........

Fleury was outside the crease both times. The first time he leaned into a hit and got grazed and did a flopping job that would've made Syndey Crosby proud.

What do the Penguins and Greg Louganis have in common? They're both excellent divers.

smoss.....ah, a new name with a new, refreshing, never-before-used comment.

June 4, 2008  07:42 AM ET

NOT..............

June 4, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Fleury puts himself in those situations .. If i were Babcock, i would just tell my guys to really plow him & actually earn the penalty !

June 4, 2008  07:53 AM ET

And that pic of Babcock is creepy, he looks like a serial killer ....

June 4, 2008  07:56 AM ET

When did Willem Dafoe start coaching the Red Wings?

June 4, 2008  07:59 AM ET

lol Durk, good observation!

June 4, 2008  08:03 AM ET

I was wondering why he looked familiar......

June 4, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Haha, thanks.
He will throw one of his green goblin balls onto the ice tonight to destroy the Penguins. But, Gary Roberts will throw himself on top of the ball to protect his team.

Before the Boogeyman goes to sleep he checks under his bed for Gary Roberts!

Having played hockey for 18 years and coaching for 10 I have to laugh at the complaints against the ZEBRAS. Most of tricks I have taught kids are now penalties in the NHL, but the one thing you always taught was not to hit the goalie (sorta not), it riles up the other team and gets you in the box. The one universal truth in sporst is never, ever expect the ZEBRAS to help. EVER!! So Fleury dived, everyone dives once in a while, it is what is taught from peewees.

June 4, 2008  08:24 AM ET

It worked so well for Therrien.

June 4, 2008  08:25 AM ET

I think we're all disgusted (Red Wings players, coaches, and fans) about what happened Monday. The Wings were 34 seconds away from a Stanley cup, and the game is tied up. Then we lose in triple overtime on a penalty kill! I hate it when penalties are called in overtime!

June 4, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Abe Lincoln - his beard = Mike Babcock

June 4, 2008  08:33 AM ET

He should consider a stovepipe hat.

June 4, 2008  08:35 AM ET

So, Therrien complains about the officiating, and Detroit accuses the Pens of whining...Babcock does it, and it's an astute observation? Please. What a BS double standard.

June 4, 2008  08:40 AM ET

And Fleury was NOT outside the crease as evidenced by the fact that he wound up inside the net after the hit.

Look, it's simple. No NHL fan wants the cup decided on a call that COULD have been overlooked. At the same time, if the Wings had scored on the plays where MAF got hit, it taints those as well.

If you don't want a penalty for running into the goalkeep, here's a hint: Don't run into the goalkeep.

Actually no he wasn't, he was on his post, for one and at the top of his crease for the other. They were soft calls though, I will agree with that, the good flop on the Cleary one made it pretty hard for the refs not to call. But like they said the high stick is black and white. which is all that really mattered. After all the Wings look just as dominant on the PK as they do even strength and I was actually expecting them to win it shorthanded.

I the Red Wings case, it's pretty obvious the NHL wants this to go seven games. It's all about money and that's the bottom line. This is their' dream series' and if Detroit swept the Pens, or even won in five, the NHL would be accused of having another lop-sided final. The calls have gone against the Wings all series long, and they've won three of those games, so no reason they won't suck it up and still win the Cup.
