Penguin squirts Wings Zamboni driver

Al Sobotka, the buildings operation manager and Zamboni driver at Joe Louis Arena, has gotten considerable attention over the years for picking up octopuses that fans there throw on the ice, then twirling them over his head. Indeed, the league has mandated that he no longer do it on the ice, because the debris that flies off the octopus as it is spun can spray onto not only the playing surface, but also onto players who aren't a safe distance away. Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury decided to be proactive about protecting himself before Game 5, so when Sobotka began to twirl an octopus in the Zamboni entrance, Fleury did a little spraying of his own, turning his water bottle on Sobotka. After volunteering yesterday that "I just missed my mouth by a little bit," Fleury acknowledged his actions.

Ha!

I guess this is a good thread .....

Maybe the Penguins should twirl a dead Penguin before each game. No wait, that would be stupid. But octopus, that's not stupid...

June 4, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Durk, im all for seeing sum1 twirl a dead penguin! lol

June 4, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Utley....I've got something you can twirl......

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

notice how Peta has no problem with the mistreatment of Octopi, they would be all over the dead penguin, if it happened.

June 4, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Next time, smack him with a 2x4.

I've noticed that, and like I said before, I think because it's not furry and cute they stay out of it.

I think this is funny, nothing like a little rivalry within a rivalry.

June 4, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Anyone that uses a Octopi like a lasso should be squirted with a brick. Dope

June 4, 2008  09:12 AM ET

If that Sobotka character enjoys been a jacka*ss, he shouldn't complain when he's treated like one! He's lucky it was only water! It could've been sardine juice!

June 4, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Squirt.

June 4, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Whatever flicks your switch .....

I always put the octopus thing a bit odd, but Fleury needs to lighten up. It's a tradition in Detroit, albeit a dopey one. How would they (the Pens) react if someone on Detroit threw paint on all those pretty white t-shirts the fans ALL WEAR

Whalers

Actually, PETA has had issues with this, moreso when they were throwing them alot.

June 4, 2008  09:52 AM ET

C'mon Spiny. Fleury needs to lighten up? He squirted him with water not battery acid.

What's silly is the whole media reaction to the octopi toss. I couldn't believe the kid who tossed one in game 4 got national media interviews.

It's a fun little tradition. Even non-Wings fans don't mind it (PETA members excepted)

June 4, 2008  10:07 AM ET

The octopi tossing is not at issue here. If the fans can one passed security, they can toss it on the ice!

What's at issue here is this garbage picking jerk swinging the slimy, stinky critter around near the opposing team's bench, acting like he is the star of the show! If I was on the ice, I'd tie it around his neck!

June 4, 2008  10:09 AM ET

In a game where the speed and force of impacts make the NFL look like a middle school hallway at lunchtime, and where we have two magnificient teams ready for a giant game tonight, we get a thread about Octopi. And waterbottle squirting.

T-fo,
I guess it was just messing about. And we all know the media tends to blow these things a wee bit out of sorts. I thought it was funny originally, I have some vague memory of Patrick Roy getting out of the way of them back when the Wings/Avs was one of the best rivalries in hockey
