Joba experiment looks ugly to start

The cameras flashed and energy sizzled through a packed crowd last night at Yankee Stadium, the telltale signs of a huge event. Then why did it feel, to some degree, as if the Yankees were still in spring training? It was the first week of June, yet the Yanks remained in the audition phase, turning Joba Chamberlain into a starter and running through a cattle call to try to find a suitable replacement for him as a late-game reliever. In the big picture this probably is the right move with Chamberlain, to see if he indeed can blossom into a top-of-the-rotation stalwart. But it sure does feel as if 2008 is slowly being sacrificed to this experiment. The Yanks had hoped for at least four innings from Chamberlain, a spring-training length. But with his adrenaline still pumping like a reliever, Chamberlain was wild and gone after recording just seven outs. That forced the Yanks into the bullpen earlier than they were even anticipating.

Major over reaction by the media. Yes he did not pitch well. However over 2 2/3 he got out of a bases loaded jam and while walking four giving a balk and having a pass ball he still only gave up the one run while on the mound. He didnt pitch well and still walked off the mound with the Yanks having a chance to win.

We've seen why it's not a good move this past week. Hawkins blows the lead in extra innings when Mo would've been in if Joba was still in the pen, Farnsworth does what Farnsworth does Monday night, and now Joba throws 62 innings in less than 3 innings. Even without the limit, that's not good. The problem with him being a starter is he tries to strike everyone out. He's always looking for that big pitch. And then the bullpen implodes in the 7th. Big surprise.

And yeah, ESPN dry-humping the East Coast. What else is new?

Force majeure.

They pulled him after 62 pitches and he was settling down. Of course he was going to be rough in his first start very few rookie starters aren't. The Yankees blew it by pulling him so early when no other starter would have been pulled and going to their bullpen prematurely. That Giese guy would have done a better job holding the score down if he had come in in the 4th or 5th but the Yanks put him in a bad spot.

Yanks have a chance at the playoffs, the Mets dont, cuz they suck!

As a BoSox fan I enjoy seeing the Yanks in last, however I NEVER count them out. Ever.

Joba Chamberlain looked more like Joba the Hut. Welcome to last place New York, and another year of not getting close to the playoffs. LarryB

Larry B is right this is just like 1993 when they didnt make the playoffs again.
Congrats enjoy the taste of your foot

I find it interesting that they are referring to Joba as their savior. I can't remember the last time a pitcher went from reliever to starter, during the season, and it was successful. Ian Kennedy was too good to trade for Santana, Hughes was an ace, starting this year, now they are down to moving their only successful middle reliever to starter.

Joba looked like he was aiming his pitches to much in the first inning, by the second he was settling down by using his fastball and slider with much better control.

Pat Tabler the colour guy for the Jays brought up a good point last night, with established closers garnering so much money these days, why not just keep Joba on hand to by your stopper of the future? It's not like Rivera will pitch forever.

in the short term joba would be better suited for the yanks bullpen, the bullpen is straight DO-DO!! in the long run joba would be better off helping the yanks every 5th day with more innings......everyones seems to forget this guy was a starter not too long ago. i say just leave him progressing to become a starter, they're in last place anyways....it looks to be getting worse than any better

Hey ****...as much as I hate the Yanks, they've made the playoffs 12 years running. People like you should jump off the highest roof you can find...face first.

Making the playoffs isn't what the Yanks and most of their fans have in mind each year. Call it arrogant or whatever you want to but the expectations are there each season. We're not talking about the Rays or even the Dodgers (boy I would settle for a playoff appearance).

June 4, 2008  08:49 AM ET

SoFlaBoy... Of course "only" the playoffs isn't good enough in NY, but the remark was simply in response to the comment "another year of not getting close to the playoffs." Yeah, yeah... we get it. "Yanks have high expectations." He was simply pointing out the obvious....

Does anyone actually READ comments before posting knee-jerk reactions?

Not impressive, but not a waste. I only wish they'd started him AWAY from NY the game before... against Livan Hernandez (who gets pummeled by the Yanks)... and NOT against Halladay. I still think he's better suited out of the pen, and some of the previous starters needed to step up.. but it doesnt seem like Girardi's scheduling was doing him any favors
