Is 18 too young for NASCAR?

In case no one has noticed, Joey Logano will be making his second Nationwide Series start in Nashville Superspeedway this weekend. Based on all the hype from his debut last weekend, the Federated Auto Parts 300 has been canceled, and track officials have already sent Logano the trophy. Well, OK, we're only kidding. And you know what? Logano may very well win the race this weekend. Good for him. But before we anoint Logano as the next savior of NASCAR, let's remember he's 18 years old. The streets of North Carolina are littered with former 18-year-old superstars. This is no knock on Logano, for plenty of people in the sport feel he's the real deal. And maybe he is. But how many people thought Casey Atwood was the real deal at 18? And where is Atwood now? Forced to serve as a backup driver to Greg Biffle for the Nashville race. What happened to Atwood is an issue for others to decide. My issue is the increasing demand for younger drivers. Logano was pegged a star before he could legally drive on the streets. Isn't that a little too much for a teenager?

If you don't think these kids should mature before coming to NASCAR just listen to Kyle Bushes mouth! A great driver that acts like a 16 year old!!!!

June 5, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Ohio-
Exactly, if you let these young kids run in the cup series too young then do not be suprised and shocked when thay let you down by acting stupid. Put them in the Nationwide series till an age that is approiate, whatever that may be. Also, i have said for a while the drivers are getting younger and driving less years, what happens when you start to run out of skilled drivers, you'll never run out of drivers, but how about ones with the skill to keep the fans interested.

If they can drive their butts off, let 'em drive.

June 5, 2008  08:18 AM ET

If Logano runs nationwide only this year and the next 2 years
and then decide to go cup when he is 21 his career will be the better for it. His immaturity showed after the race when he said 6th place was not good enough. Everybody wants to win but since 42 drivers won't win all you can do is compete and do the best you can.
Your 6th place finish was tremendous. Saying I want to win every time is going to get old really fast, just race hard and put on a good show and take advantage of any opportunities at the end (like shrub blowing an engine,or biffle losing his mind about a loose wheel)

C-Smith-- As long as they drive their butts off and keep their immature mouths shut!!!! I am sooooooooooooo tired of Kyle and his mouth!!!!And I don't believe I am the only one...

June 5, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Seriously, no telling what Logano will become with Kyle B as a role model.... THe kid seems to have talent, but we'll have to see if it is him or the equipment he is in, and that will take more time. Keep him out of the cup series for a while.....too many innexperienced guys on the track as it is.

wont be long before they are running these cars with training wheels...................the drivers will come to the pit for a diaper change and a fill up of sunoco racing fuel

June 5, 2008  09:24 AM ET

At 18 years old you can join the workforce anywhere else ,why not Nascar? Too dangerous? I'm sure some 18 year olds protecting Baghdad would beg to differ.
If you have the skills set to be paid well then do it.

June 5, 2008  09:30 AM ET

The only REAL issues to consider in the dicussion of "18 yr olds" are 1. Driving Skill... 2. Maturity. The first is either inbred or learned with practice (if possible) and the second is with time for most. Maturity is also something that some 24 yrs old don't have, but at some point they even come of age. Logano and Kesolowski are excellent examples of having plenty of skill and as for maturity, ya gotta just keep your fingers crossed once they hit the track. I'd much rather see those two youngsters race than some of these characters whose best day on the track is 31st weeek after week.

Lydia, were do you out the catch can while he is filling up with fuel?

June 5, 2008  09:31 AM ET

sorry, put the catch can

the next few years with Logano, Busch, and Hamlin are going to be very interesting.

Hillbilly Jim

Well said. Old enough to die in Baghdad!

June 5, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Hillbilly Jim , I agree that was well said and right to the point.

Shynloco, I agree with you too. Not all 18 yr old drivers with end up like Kyle B. And not all of them will look to him as their role model either.
I watched that Logano interview after his 6th place finish and I though he was disappointed for himself ,but not arrogant at all.
I like the kid and I hope he continues to do well.

June 5, 2008  11:22 AM ET

18 years old -- if they person can show the ability/talent ... they need the opportunity to go for it! Many here have made the comment about 18 year old military types that serve without bias as to their age. As a DoD type I can tell you that the "work force" of our military services are made up of outstanding young men and women. OK! -- I will stand down from the soap box!!

If you can drive, you can race. End of story. If the talent is there why not benefit?

My wife can drive, but she definitely can't race.....

18 isn't too old in the South. I mean, look at Britney's sister, she's knocked up and she's like 16. Ohh, we're talking about driving, nevermind.

P.S. I like flugelboy's comment!!!
