Friend: Junior ain't that great

A friend has been repeating the fact for weeks now that Dale Earnhardt Jr., despite the team switch, despite the money, despite everything else, hasn't yet won a race. And, he notes, he hasn't won in more than two years. "I just don't see where he is that great," he says. He's not alone. Though he's sitting third in the points standings and had his fair share of bad luck, every week that goes by without a win, brings up talk of Earnhardt's winless streak. "He never wins," the friend added, "he is the same thing NASCAR hated when [Matt] Kenseth won [the title]...He does laps." No surprise, the friend fears the use of his name will launch an attack by members of the Junior Nation, which, race fans know, is as strong and vocal as the Kiss Army.

Journalists have FRIENDS?? Who knew...?

June 5, 2008  06:24 AM ET

Wow what a deewib-o-matic. Who really cares about who is great? Is Randy Moss great....most likey to young thugs. Is Mark McGwire great....probably to his son. Is you r mamma great? Yes, she is and I like her alot too. Is Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson great or Busch or Bush.......? We all just human beings. A boy out on the plains of Africa is the fastest human on Earth, but hey - no one will ever know, because he does not care about running from one point to another. Get it.?

June 5, 2008  06:51 AM ET

(Is Your mamma great? Yes she is and I like her alot too)
That was funny.
Seriously though anybody with this guy watching his back can correctly say to the world I have no friends. No friend throws you under the bus PERIOD. This was just some person who hangs around the fringes and tells the world. Yeah man, me and JR are tight. Then to keep the conversation going, talks about how its a shame he cant really race. I wonder if he Realizes how repellent he is in the eyes of the person he is telling his stories too. I miss the days when gossip was not news

No surprise, the friend fears the use of his name will launch an attack by members of the Junior Nation, which, race fans know, is as strong and vocal as the Kiss Army

This statement is absolutely FALSE. The Kiss Army is worldwide. Take a look at Ebay items....sold and bought from China to Argetina. Sorry Jr Nation, no where near the popularity! Other wise I will just this article is a waste of space.

This poor guy can't get no room to breath, people rag on him when he does not finish well in races and then when he runs well and is finishing in the top 10 they still are not happy. News flash, you can't win every race, did everybody think that when he got behind the wheel of a hendrick car he was going to win every race, i personaly think he is doing well, and yes i know i'm a fan so big surprise. My point is he has been right up front this year and has almost won a couple, lest not forget the Jr. and Busch bump on the last lap with Jr leading and on his way to a win.

June 5, 2008  07:47 AM ET

This dide is no friend to Jr. If I had a friend who would talk aboout me like this, well they wouldn't fe a friend for long.. Sure, he hasn't won in 2 years, and I doubt he will even be like his Daddy. But he doesn't have to be like Dad, he is who he is. and what he accomplishes on and off the track is good enough for me...

June 5, 2008  07:50 AM ET

What kind or even how good of a friend can someone be if they dont support you?

June 5, 2008  08:01 AM ET

Is it a friend of the reporter or a friend of Jr's? I thought it was a friend of Jr's

June 5, 2008  08:01 AM ET

Sorry.... friend of the reporter

June 5, 2008  08:03 AM ET

Oh, I misread it also, and they probably wanted us too.......I thought it was a friend of Jr.s..My bad!!!

June 5, 2008  08:19 AM ET

I am not nor have I ever been a Jr. fan but some of these stories are absolute drivel. I would guess Jr. wants a win as well as any driver, maybe a little more considering the changes of the last year. The first clue that this was a nothing story is that it was in the New York Daily News. Enough said on that. Believe me he hasn't won a race this year but my guess is that he will and maybe win more than one. He can still laugh all the way to the bank. He might not be the driver his father was but he is far and away a better person.

June 5, 2008  08:29 AM ET

JK- Yes, you are right, he is a good person!!!

June 5, 2008  08:34 AM ET

JK-
just wondering if you are saying Dale sr. was a bad person or the driver Dale Sr. was a bad person? I think the two are totally different, Dale Jr. has even said himself that his dad was an imposing and focused person at and on the track but away from the track he was a great person, so to say someone is a bad person by what we see on TV is kinda unfair.

June 5, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Well, if we want to be technical about it Jr has actually won twice this year. Even non-points races are still races. It is not like he was running laps by himself....he was competing with other drivers to be the first one to cross the finish line. People should keep that in mind......

June 5, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Good point Marbles - those were feel good days for the Nation.

June 5, 2008  09:15 AM ET

He's 3rd place in points - that's all that matters now.

June 5, 2008  09:22 AM ET

OK -- drag out the cheese again, I detect a whine ... it is apparent someone has an ego problem because their name is not in print. Jr's record speaks for itself this year -- agree with others in that some sniveling writer has cranked this up ... I don't think it came out of HMS as the reprecussions (if source were verified) would be a stake to the heart.

June 5, 2008  09:22 AM ET

That is one misleading headline designed to start controversy.
I thought it was a friend of JR's too. the new york daily news part should have rung an alarm bell. If the friend told the reporter it would be a good Idea to see hendrick walk up to jack roush and kiss him, do you think the reporter would print that.

June 5, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Ah the old anonymous "Friend" thing again. Whose the moron who came up with this one...another JR hater I'd guess. Like the man just said, Jr is 3rd in points...can't be all that bad. Look at all the "better drivers" who are 4 through 20 on the list. Dang Jr...learn to drive will ya please!!!!

Where the heck did this story come from the National Enquirer?? I have a friend who thinks the moon landing was staged BIG DEAL
