Tiger: Nobody watches hockey

The PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, Mich., is two months away, but Tiger Woods took the first unofficial shot of the tournament Monday when he teed off on Hockeytown. During a news conference at Oakland Hills Country Club, where Woods appeared via satellite, the two-time defending champion was asked whether he was rooting for the Red Wings or the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals Monday night at Joe Louis Arena. Woods chuckled at the question. Then he let 'er rip. "I don't really care," he said with an impish smile. "It's all about the Dodgers. I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore."

He is right -- it takes a real man to knock that little white ball in a hole. And the stress -- it might go into water or e...even..gasp..sand! ~

Great.. now the golf world and the hockey world fans are gonna duke it out.. Tiger, for someone so typically PC, this was a dumb thing to say.....lol

June 5, 2008  06:51 AM ET

He ought to check out this site, lol

Agree with KPKahder...

"His words carry no weight what-so-ever." -bostongm

LMAO. He's only the wealthiest athlete on the planet, making three times more money a year than the next most highly paid athlete (Mickelson, also a golfer). Clearly he was joking. Leave it at that. Congrats to Detroit on winning the cup. They earned it (I'm an Avs fan, so it pains me to say it).

June 5, 2008  07:20 AM ET

Im 90-95% sure that Detroit uses steroids...

June 5, 2008  07:25 AM ET

Go **** yourself tiger.

June 5, 2008  07:43 AM ET

What a ****. Golf is G A Y.

June 5, 2008  07:51 AM ET

I agree with bgm that Lidstrom is better than Bourque

And who cares about this? First off, it happened a couple days ago. Secondly, he's not that far off. Sure, these playoffs helped the NHL increase some ratings in the U.S., but in the scheme of things, Tiger is right, nobody (outsie of Canada, for the most part) watches hockey anymore. Why is he a villain for stating the truth? Hopefully something like this will open the midget co**sucker's eyes to the fact that more needs to be done to promote this incredible sport than just expanding into regions the NHL doesn't belong in.

The NHL just needs to use this as motivation to step up to the plate and show the American public how exciting and fast-paced this sport really is - show Tiger and others exactly what they are missing!

WINGS! WINGS! WINGS! whoop! whoop!

"What's hockey?"- Phil Mickelson

Someone forgot to tell him that TV ratings for the Cup finals in the U.S. are at a five-year high, while the Neilsen Ratings listed an eight per cent drop in U.S. viewership of the Masters for the final two rounds.

To assume Woods is an athlete would be to acknowledge GOLF is a sport.
Woods is a good golfer who is plying his trade in an era lacking any real competition! Who cares what a guy says that can be so easily rattled by the simple click of a shutter.
Tiger...When do the Bowling finals start?

June 5, 2008  08:10 AM ET

Unfortunately GOCanada has it right. Outside of Canada hardley anyone watches - and the golf ratings dropped because Tiger was not leading.

Go Wings - to me this was the best of the Cup wins Detroit has had.

June 5, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Well I was watching and man I'm tired; it's brutal being a hockey fan when you're in a time zone far, far away. Glad I stayed up to watch though, there's nothing quite like it anywhere else in sport. Damn NASN never shows those final little bits and pieces though (too keen to get back to baseball), so I missed out on the wrap-up montage. Baun-ded you were pretty well on target with most of your predictions there. Commiserations T-Rocks. Congrats go-Canada, great avatar :)

June 5, 2008  08:16 AM ET

It's actually true, though...the NHL is miserable for TV.

June 5, 2008  08:23 AM ET

really... between, TSN, Sportsnet, RDS anc CBC I can watch hockey just about any night outta the week during the season. Bettman needs to get the game as accessible in the US as it is in Canada. Just give them their glowing puck back maybe they'll be able to follow the game.

June 5, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Well he seems to be pretty much on the money, in the US anyway.outside of the real hockey markets, it doesn't seem like it gets much coverage. It's a shame, but it's true.

LIDSTROM IS BETTER THAN BOURQUE.

bostongm..lost a bet with goC! | 06/05/08, 06:53 AM

You're on the money here, but Lidstrom did have a lot more years with real Cup contending teams. But he's still not better than good ol' Bobby.

June 5, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Thanks Oilers...that CBC wrap up was really well done at the conclusion of the game and its aftermath and sadly, the end of another Hockey year.

I believe that Tiger doesn't have time to watch hockey as he probably spends much of his time practicing making Nascar race car noises. Oh...maybe not...don't want to say noise too loud around Mr. Prima Donna "Golden Bear" wannabe. For all Wood's stupid comments, I swear he must have grown up watching Brett Hull interviews. What a hypocrite. Can't fool me.

I believe we all know how that would turn out ;)

Maybe Mike Weir should pull a Bobby Clarke and hack Tiger's bum knee at the U.S Open with his 9 iron.

Looks to me like the recent Bruin invasion we've had to endure of late, has decreased by one Avatar this morning...about time.
