Leafs make Wilson an offer

Ron Wilson completed a full day of meetings yesterday with Leafs interim general manager Cliff Fletcher. An offer was extended to Wilson, a former Leaf draft pick and coach of the San Jose Sharks, to become the 36th head coach in Toronto's history. "We met (Monday night) and twice (yesterday) and made him an offer," Fletcher said. "And now he's going back to (South Carolina) to think about it and discuss it with his wife. "I don't expect to touch base again until the weekend."

no REAL rush, as long as he is in place for the draft and free agent period. He probably didn't see his SJ firing coming, so he has all his scouting reports and whatnot in order already anyway. Let him have his week or so, then jump into his upcoming losing season wholeheartedly.

On another note: Red Wings, 2008 Stanley Cup Champs! OOOOWWWWW!

June 5, 2008  08:12 AM ET

I'd be willing to bet he'll be the new bench boss based on all the meetings they have concluded. He is running back to SJ to tell his wife the good news personally and being that he is very excited about it...wants to tear off a piece.

I'd also be willing to bet this new contributer with the Wings Cup avatar that the Leafs will not have a losing season...

June 5, 2008  08:55 AM ET

I hope the Leafs have a good season, it makes for more enjoyable viewing of a Saturday night (or Sunday morning in my case)
btw Baun-ded, how's the new job?

June 5, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Frig...I knew I forgot something this morning...thanks for the reminder Oil. Guess I better get a move on. LOL

June 5, 2008  09:08 AM ET

So they'll have a new coach, and then the GM that comes in will be saddled with a guy who may not fit his philosophy. It's exactly this kind of thinking that has made the Leafs so wildly successful these last forty years

June 5, 2008  09:24 AM ET

I've heard that he's already turned it down, but it was from a drunk at the bar last night so it might not be that reliable. I think you'd have to be drunk to get into that mess right now anyway.

Why doesn't it surprise me that evolvguy would run into another Bruin banner in bostongm in that condition.

June 5, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Word in Toronto is that he's already signed and they are going to bring on Burke too, but were waiting until the Cup Final was over so as not to take away from that. That sounds like a Burke move, because he apologized to the Wings' and Pens', organizations on Hockey Night in Canada when the subject was brought up during a brief interview.

June 5, 2008  10:16 AM ET

He's in at the helm of the Leafs for sure. Should be a plus for them, for sure. SJ firing was a joke. Players don't produce it's always the coach that gets the brunt of the blame. I know it's part of the job taking the responsibility, but SJ just played like crap against Dallas. I think they burned themselves out trying to catch the Wings in that late season run. ( ie see Wings burnout from previous years)
Back on track I think he'll be a great coach for the Leafs and I agree Baun, they should show some pretty steep improvement next year.

June 5, 2008  10:17 AM ET

think I got enough "for sures" in those first two sentences..omg

titansftw | 06/05/08, 09:08 AM

Ahhhh not so fast sir. I think even the Leafs are smart enough to realize that would be a very foolish move. Which makes me think, they have their GM and were just waiting for the Cup finals to be over to announce it. So don't worry (I can tell your worried)

June 5, 2008  11:25 AM ET

what would you be willing to bet? I made bgm admit that Lidstrom is better than Bourque with this last one, and I gotta tell ya, it feels awfully good.

Mind you, we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves here, it'd be tough to remember this bet from now till way down the road in April when the Leafs are out of it by missing the playoffs again...

June 5, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Baun, GoCan ...going to put up new blog tonite...lemme know what ya think

oh and I'll try to put in a pic or two this time Baun

June 5, 2008  03:49 PM ET

By 35 points. As for the bottom comments .........it is not an admission. I lost the bet!!!!!!!Thats all!!!!! Damn!!!

LIDSTROM IS BETTER THAN BOURQUE

BUT IT'S A TRUE STATEMENT

that should stir him up

June 5, 2008  05:43 PM ET

Wilson looks like the guy from SAW. "I want to play a game...I want you to make a choice. There's a slow-acting poison coursing through your system, which only I have the antidote for. Will you murder a mother and her child to save yourself? Listen carefully, if you will. There are rules."

June 5, 2008  06:00 PM ET

I've read that he hasn't even taken the position yet. Seems their is an issue with money. Besides, even he does take it, neither he nor the new (existing?) GM will have any real power until Peddie is gone. He controls the show, period. That won't happen so, realistically it will be the same old same old. Too bad.

June 5, 2008  06:05 PM ET

bostongm
where,s your follow up bet
Lidstrom vs Orr? I vote Orr.

June 5, 2008  07:39 PM ET

Orr is clearly the best d-man the NHL has ever seen. No one compares to him.
