Bulldog arrested on gun charge

Jeremy Lomax made a mistake and is the first to admit it. "It was a big misunderstanding," the Georgia defensive end said. That misunderstanding landed Lomax in Athens-Clarke County Jail Wednesday morning. The senior was arrested and jailed for carrying a concealed weapon and speeding at 12:42 a.m. Lomax was clocked doing 80 mph in a 55-mph zone on Loop 10, the police report stated. After pulling Lomax over, the police asked if there were weapons in the vehicle. Lomax said there was an unloaded handgun under the driver's seat. The police searched the vehicle and found a Glock 40. Lomax was arrested and taken to jail. He posted a $3,000 bond and was released at 1:30 a.m. "I thought you could have a gun without a clip in it in the car," Lomax said. "But the Georgia law says it has to be in the glove compartment and can't be under the seat."

The gun charge is really splitting hairs; no c;ip (inloaded) uder the seat instead of in the glove box. I live in Atlanta now, and I am certain most people here are not fully aware of that.

I think it's pretty jacked up as well. The officer gets to tell the boys at the station that he arrested a Georgia Football Player.

Did he misunderstand that doing 80 in a 55 zone is illegal? Also, anyone that wants to own a pistol should understand the laws concerning it.

June 5, 2008  10:23 AM ET

To be fair, the loop 10 turns into 65 and 55 at random times. Right around the East Campus Village, where most athletes live, the speed limit is 65.
Still, going 80 is fast enough to get a speeding tax regardless. Going 15 over sounds a lot better than 25 over, and there's a law that if you're going 24 over the speed limit then it is an automatic license suspension if you're under 21.

It'll be interesting to see if he gets punished and what kind of punishment he will get.

If he played for LSU people would be calling for his head!

June 5, 2008  12:28 PM ET

This is one reason why I do not poke fun at other schools when their players brake the law. it was a matter of time before it hit us. Yall remember this next time another ball player from another school gets caught. Stuff like this happens all over.

Nice headline. I only read it because I was hoping it was an actual bulldog!!! Georgia is going to have an excellent tem this year, so I'll shutup now!!!

June 5, 2008  01:09 PM ET

I don't think peole are as upset b/c he was speeding which most everyone does, he willingly told the officer about his unloaded pistol which is a second amendment right to possess, he wasn't using the pistol irresponsibly, and he wasn't drunk or high at the time.

June 5, 2008  02:52 PM ET

I'd give the kid the benefit of the doubt on this as long as he knows that a second transgression crosses the fine line between "error in judgement" and "stupidity."

June 5, 2008  05:20 PM ET

I'm an LSU fan and this isn't even a story. The guy was obviously honest with the cops and the law is pretty silly. I hope for his sake that the charges are dropped, which I bet happens.

June 5, 2008  08:32 PM ET

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. This society has a fatale lust for guns and it shows up in all aspects of American life. But hey, this might be a new technic
in getting past a O-lineman to sack the QB???

June 5, 2008  09:35 PM ET

Don't you just looooove cops?

June 5, 2008  10:04 PM ET

Maybe bulldog need it for protection against Michael Vick.

June 5, 2008  10:36 PM ET

If you had a shotgun in the rear window rack there would be no problems!

June 6, 2008  12:26 AM ET

If he played for LSU he wouldn't have been arrested. We can carry firearms anywhere in the vehicle. Something about the vehicle being an extension of the home or something. Besides, you **** the deer while fumbling through a glove box while holding the Q-beam spotlight.

June 6, 2008  12:30 AM ET

Why was the word s.p.o.o.k not allowed? as in scare the deer. Sensorship! C'mon, I'm not a potty mouth.

June 6, 2008  01:34 AM ET

Censorship will be worse under Obama!
