Disgruntled TE rips Jets management

Posted: Friday June 06, 2008 05:49AM ET

Tight end Chris Baker ripped Jets management Thursday, bringing an air of familiarity to the first minicamp practice. This follows the Pete Kendall controversy last year, when Kendall, a guard, argued with management about his contract and was eventually traded to the Redskins before the season opener. Baker connected Kendall's leaving with the Jets??? 4-12 record. "His situation was ridiculous," Baker said. "It basically tanked our season last year. It looks like we're going down the same road." General manager Mike Tannenbaum said he was comfortable with the Jets' reputation among agents for how the team deals with its players. But Baker is the third Jet since last season to say the team promised him a new deal, only to renege.

What a "debacle". Typical Jets. Mangini tries to manage his players like a Parcells or Belichick, but does not have the cred to do so. Players around the league won't want to play for him and no team is going to want to hire him after he gets fired for what his snitching did to the league.

This is what happens when you throw big money out there in FA. You had to know this was coming. Lito with the Eagles and on and on..
The player has no leverage here, but he has no reason to lie. The Jets should have learned something from last year, but it seems they did not.

He needs to act more like TO and just wait it out.

putting in his request for a washington trade early?

Way to go NYJ's...what a mess.

While I don't want to seem to be siding with Jets management I have to say losing Kendell did contribute towards the 4-12 record, but losing Baker would not be anywhere near as bad as losing their LG was.

Sleeveless Bill doesn't goof up like ths.

Let me know when this clown actually does something on the field to deserve any sort of raise. Showing up doesn't count.

EXCELLENT point willy
I am a Jets fan-
I like Baker- wish he were used more over the years

But his CAREER stats : over 6 years
are 124 catches, 1311 yards, 12 tds
last year- his CAREER year
41 rec, 409 yds, 3 tds

He is an AVERAGE TE inthe league-
You have NO reason to ask to re-do your contract-
when you legitamately have done nothing in the league-

He needs to be CUT

They might not have made a direct promise but there was probably a wink or a nudge on their part to convince him to wait for a new contract. I don't know if he deserves a new contract but a promise is a promise.

The league needs to stop this crap. Make all players fulfill their contract. No extensions, no renegotiating, nothing. And put a gag order on all players and teams concerning contracts still open, this is getting out of hand. It's the same old story, player has a good year or feels underpaid or is getting old, and suddenly wants a new contract!

help the TE out he help the team with cap by taking some of his contract money early....

This guy signed a 3 year deal for 6.6 million.
Even his rudimentary math skills should allow him to see that he's making 2.2 mil a year. The signing bonus fronts him most of the dough, but he's convienently forgotten that.

Floyd Reese had a great comment about this last night on NFL Live. He said that signing bonuses are what makes it so hard to go back and renegotiate deals after signing initially. They pay most of them out in the first years of the deal so by the time they are paid out then the guy wants a new deal and costs them a lot more.

Other than Faneca, aren't all of the jets disgruntled? They're the jets.

Block, get open, catch some passes and stfu! I had you for a week in fantasy last year and you brought me ZERO!!!

Just cut him and move on. Bubba Franks and Dustin Keller will do for now.

Who is Chris Baker? Who cares?

The only thing that has ever kept the Jets from being a complete joke as a franchise was Superbowl III. You cant hang onto the Broadway Joe days anymore Jets fans. You just suck.
