Penske Racing may lose Alltel

Penske Racing could be in jeopardy of losing sponsor Alltel, which has agreed to a merger with Verizon. "When Nextel became the title sponsor, we notified all teams that existing competing sponsorships could stay in the series indefinitely so long as there was no change in branding," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Thursday in a statement. "This is the case with the Alltel brand -- it can stay on the car indefinitely but if it transitions to Verizon or any competing company then it can no longer run a different sponsor on any car in the [Cup Series]." AT&T, which bought Cingular in December 2006, took NASCAR to federal court in order to change its sponsorship of the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing car from Cingular to AT&T. In September 2007, a settlement was reached that allowed AT&T to use its trademarks on the No. 31 car through the 2008 season before having to leave as the team's sponsor.

Two things:
I broke this news first here yesterday
The orange car with the ATT blue looks just silly

Rodger Penske is one of smartest business men in the world.
He probably won't give this a second thought.
Companies will line up to sponsor his car and be associated with him.

Try to follow the money. It has started to have it's effect on Nascar.
In the not too distant future, with drivers jumping to other teams and owners pulling deals, it will be like all the other pro sports.
You won't be able to tell the players without a scorecard.

Its a shame to lose BIG advertisers (like phone companies) because of the Sprint contract. Man, Newman has been under that sponsorship for ages.

June 6, 2008  09:50 AM ET

I pray that never happens.
I never would have believed growing up that NASCAR would take my attention away from football but in the last decade, all the back and forth with NFL owners and players about money, leaving the fan completely screwed, I have focused totally on racing.
I will watch the race on Sunday and catch the football highlights on ESPN

Asbel; Not sure if you agree or disagree with me. My point is the racing game is starting to go the way of all the other sports. Some people argue that the influx of money is good for racing. It is to a certain extent and then all of a sudden big money is making all the decisions, both on and off track. How many people have stopped following football, baseball or basketball because of what has happened to those sports. My point is, money is good but too much is not so good.Example is the Celtics, great team this year, front row seat $1400. The owners are 12 or 13 big money investors. Highland capital, Tudor Investment are but two of them. My question is, when these guys see a better investment, what happens to the Celtics? My guess is the money all goes to another team or some other hot deal at the time and the Celtics go by the wayside. John Henry who is involved with Roush did the same thing to the Marlins.

They could do so much better than Newman. He is such a disappointment as a driver.

My problem with him stems back from when Rusty was his teammate. He never worked with Rusty who was a great driver and could have made Newman and Penske Racing in general better. Rusty is a class guy and deserved better but Newman was too petty and stupid to work with him.

Again, NASCAR has sold out.
Maybe next year sponsors will leave because of the economy.
Funny how that rule did not apply when Sprint purchased Nextel.
Now we have the Sprint Series
I hope ATT merges with sprint
The we would have the blue globe cup series

Remember when Tubby Newman made the crack about Sterlin Marlin's wig? I don't know if he's looked in the mirror lately but pretty soon he will be asking Sterlin where to get one. Great qualifyer, fades out in races. Maybe the extra weight is an issue?
