Why Garnett isn't playing for Lakers

Lakers officials claim it was all but a done deal - Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown and Andrew Bynum for Kevin Garnett - upon pending approval by Minny owner Glen Taylor. That's when Kobe Bryant got publicly bent out of shape regarding the Lakers' supposed rebuilding methodology and deferral of title wave aspirations. His verbal assassination of owner Jerry Buss and Kupchak scared off Garnett, who was frantically trying to escape from just that kind of "mismanagement."

It worked out best for Garnett and the Lakers anyways..

June 6, 2008  06:16 AM ET

Yeah, personally, I'm glad it didn't happen. I think KG's a great player, but Lamar AND Bynum? Granted, this was before Bynum showed signs of becoming what they Lakers thought he could do, but the Gasol deal ended up serving them much better in the long run. Even though Gasol isn't on the same level as KG, he's still a very good player, and they'll get to pair him with Odom AND Bynum next year. I'll take those 3 over KG any day.

June 6, 2008  06:30 AM ET

Thank god that didn't happen. I don't know that I could have pulled for KG to win if he was on the Lakers.

June 6, 2008  06:51 AM ET

there is a reason the celts and lakers and both the number 1 seed. it's because the trades that needed to happen did. when the celtics win it all people can look back and say that the lakers missed out on a opportunity but the fact is both teams made blockbuster trades for all stars. without them neither would be where they are today.

Thats what I call a win win

June 6, 2008  07:21 AM ET

You the man KG. Love seeing Kevin where he belongs....in the finals.

Tis Beautiful in Boston Today.

June 6, 2008  08:18 AM ET

I love the way they played last night but we can play better D in the first half. But this is far from over yet game 2 will be a tough game.

But I'm glad we got KG, this will be a fight till the end.

Let Go Celtics.

June 6, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Will see how you Laker fans feel about it in four more games.

June 6, 2008  08:33 AM ET

this is another swipe at kobe. why do they keep going after him. the point of the story: kobe destroyed a trade with his tirade...whatever...he had been quiet for a long time and even phil jackson backed him on his position and stated something similar in support of kobe. it would have been nice for the lakers but i'm glad it didn't happen because now we have two awesome teams in the finals.

mismanagement is the wrong spelling of mismanagement with regard to the timberwolves, glen taylor and kevin mchale. mismanagement is actually spelled MISMANAGEMENT with a size 72 font.

June 6, 2008  09:08 AM ET

The both are in the championship.. guess it worked out for both... Pierce's injury will be huge if he cannot play at 80% or better now. Great finish but it is a long series..

June 6, 2008  09:11 AM ET
