Former Bears defensive lineman William "Refrigerator" Perry says he is feeling much better after a recent frightening health issue. The Bears' first-round draft pick out of Clemson in 1985 said he suffered the effects of Guillain Barre Syndrome, which is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms include general weakness of the legs, arms, breathing muscles and face.

Or vice versa. Love the Fridge, but using his name and health in the same sentence?

If this doesn't scare 150 lbs off him immediately, then unfortunately, i think we'll be reading a pretty sad headline about him in the near future.

June 6, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Get better. Thats all that matters here..

June 6, 2008  07:51 AM ET

"health scare?"

being 50+lbs over your recommended weight is a daily health scare he lives with.

June 6, 2008  07:53 AM ET

50 is conservative pw.

Watch out for Norwegians.

He was fun to watch but clearly being that overweight has serious effects now at his age... hope he can get help or he will be in serious trouble. Get Better...

Get better, Fridge. Guillain Barre Syndrome has nothing to do with large or overweight body mass.

"No one yet knows why Guillain-Barr?? strikes some people and not others or what sets the disease in motion.......Guillain-Barr?? is called a syndrome rather than a disease because it is not clear that a specific disease-causing agent is involved."

Did someone forget to plug him back in!!!!!

June 6, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Guillain Barre is no joke - one of my friends dealt with it when I was younger, and never fully recovered. He's still a functional person and everything, he just has little to no movement in his face - talks without moving his lips and is very hard to understand at times.

Hope the Fridge bounces back, he's one of my all-time favs.

If anyone is gonna "bounce" back, it's the Fridge. What a classic football player he was.

June 6, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Based solely on his size I would have bet his health scare could have been a debilitating stroke.

June 6, 2008  10:42 AM ET

I know that the disease makes you weak and when you are very heavy.. it makes it harder. He said his weight was causing him breathing issues last year..I also enjoyed him as a player and hope he gets better.

June 6, 2008  11:02 AM ET

I wonder how much he actually weighs now....

June 6, 2008  11:03 AM ET

stay out of the 'fridge and get well soon!

He looks like Jesse Jackson on roids!
