Kelvin Sampson's director of basketball operations at Indiana University told the NCAA that the coach and his staff had to have known they were breaking telephone recruiting sanctions. Ten other people -- seven recruits, two mothers of recruits and one coach -- directly implicated Sampson and former assistant coach Rob Senderoff in interviews with the NCAA. Sampson, hired in March 2006, had extra recruiting limitations during his first year at IU, including a ban on three-way phone calls, as punishment for his NCAA violations while at Oklahoma. Recruit DeJuan Blair, now a player at Pittsburgh, told an NCAA investigator he was "100 percent" sure he was on the phone with Sampson and Senderoff at the same time. "If coach Sampson said something funny, coach Senderoff would laugh; or he would ask a question and coach Senderoff would answer; or coach Senderoff would ask a question and he would answer about Indiana," Blair said.

I can't imagine that anyone is surprised by these "revelations".......Sampson is a sleazeball, and IU made a monumental mistake by hiring him.....

Is Kelvin Sampson the "Nick Saban" of College Basketball, or is Nick Saban the "Kelvin Sampson" of College Football?

June 6, 2008  11:31 AM ET

He obviously could see the writing on the wall as seen by his quick exit when this all started to go down near the end of the season. He took the buyout without putting up much of a fight or demanding more money. Oh what a fall from glory from a coach who many saw great things from just a few years ago.

That picture makes it seem like he is squeezing his ****

- that being said- he is a dirtbag.

And if the NBA had any b@lls, they wouldn't allow him to coach without some sort of penalty/suspension

June 6, 2008  12:30 PM ET

You bet he did. Dirty Kelvin has left a nice little legacy for Hoosiers.

June 6, 2008  12:48 PM ET

This should result in a lifetime ban for Sampson from the NCAA! I know he's in the NBA, but it would send a strong message to the next guy who might not go to the NBA!

I am not an Indiana fan, but I think it would be totally unfair to enforce sanctions against the University of indiana for sometjhing Sampson did. Sampson now has a job in the NBA, so why punish Indiana and their fans and players?

The penalty should be a monetary penalty from Sampson personally. Paid to me, lol

D. SLIQ

I dont know if I have ever read a funnier statement. that was awesome!!!!

Thank Gawd Blair didnt waste his college career in that Indiana wasteland.

June 6, 2008  03:52 PM ET

Two Strikes, let's see how he manages to break the rules in the NBA - I'm sure he'll find a way to get himself suspended from the league within a couple of years. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

sampson should go to work for patriots

June 6, 2008  10:45 PM ET

Excellent excellent picture. Sampson should be very happy with it. How did photographer get him to pose like that?

June 7, 2008  01:06 AM ET

He wouldn't make it with the Pats. At least with the Pats you need to be able to get away with cheating for awhile. Sampson can't get away with it for a couple months, let alone the number of years the Pats require.

As for Sampson, Indiana and the NCAA.

This will be a tough call. I think Indiana will get some sort of sanction from the NCAA for allowing this sleezeball to represent the school. I don't think the penalty should include loss of post-season participation or scholarships.

Sampson should be given a show cause penalty for a very long time. For those that don't know what the show cause penalty is, here is brief explanation. Any school which desires to hire a coach under a show cause sanction from the NCAA must show the NCAA a substantial reason that this person should be allowed to be involved in the athletic program at that instituation or any NCAA institution. It is basically a ban from coaching that the NCAA must lift if someone wants to coach prior to the timer period running out.

IU most certainly does deserve major sanctions for this incident. It's not like they thought they were hiring an angel who turned out to be Lucifer. They hired a cheater, and knew the consequences if he reverted back to that behavior. I believe a couple/three scholy's a year for 3 or 4 years, plus a post-season ban for a couple of years would be sufficient. Just embarrassing, however, the worst of the situation is Kelvin was bought out for 3/4 million dollars, signed a two year contract with the Buck for I???m sure a couple hundred thousand a year, and Indiana and it's fans have to pay for his indiscressions. That's how the cookie crumbles though for hiring cheater.
