Mauer changes hitting strategy

Joe Mauer, who hit his first two home runs of the season this week, has slightly changed his batting strategy. "Not anything too drastic, but I'm trying a couple of things to help, just taking a chance on some pitches," the Twins' catcher said Thursday. "Instead of staying with the (regular) approach, maybe I'm looking for a pitch 'in' like that." Both of Mauer's homers came on inside pitches. His upper-deck blast at the Metrodome against the Orioles on Wednesday night wasn't close to being a strike. Mauer and hitting coach Joe Vavra began working on making a better turn on inside pitches during spring training. "I'm starting to feel a little more comfortable going inside," said Mauer, who is among the American League's leading hitters at .328.

Nice pic Jr. Remindes me of basic training. Not sure why.
I pray every night that he will hit HRs. I really need the points. Really.

Dear God,

Please let Joe and his superb sideburns pierce the baggie at that MetroGnome, which sounds like the what Jr probably looks like (a Metro Gnome).

Thanks, US GOV.

Homeruns are overblown. Any MLB team would take a catcher hitting .328 this season who previously won a batting title 2-years ago, and who is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the game. I suppose if your number 4,5 and 6 hitter aren't popping cherries over the fence, then the number 3 hitter not hitting HR's is a bit glaring. Not Mauer's fault.

Good hitter

Well, I think there's about 29 other teams that would love to have a really good catcher that's won a batting title. But I ain't even the smartest guy in Mayberry.

BRILLIANT!

The guy goes 50 games without hitting a homerun, then he hits two in three games and what does he do? Tells everyone what he's changed! Great idea!

Yes, but any MLB team would rather take a cather hitting .305 AND is a power threat.

Also, "popping cherries" is not synonymous with hitting home runs. It means something entirely different.

Twinkies fan right here, and say it aint so Joe! Why mess with a perfect swing?!!! And the Metrodome is the "big inflatable toilet"

Oops.... dead already....

He's a great hitting catcher, calls a great game and throws out runners like crazy...doesn't matter if he's not a power threat yet

June 6, 2008  05:29 PM ET

Dear Joe the only thing that will really help you is a better "supporting" cast !!!

June 7, 2008  12:03 PM ET

It is about time. He has said he could hit a lot of homeruns but it would drop his average a few points. What's better? 25 homeruns with .280 average or 3 with a .320? I would take the high rbi with a little lower average any day, especially for a number 3 hitter.

Great hitter.

Mauer Power!!!!

Keep on ragging on him and he may go back to throwing the football instead of throwing base runners out!

OK. I too would like more RBI's and OBP, but I also can hardly complain. He IS a team player, so what the hey?
