Tortorella in line for open jobs

Reporters covering NHL teams in Toronto, Ottawa and Florida were on Wednesday's conference call, and each asked John Tortorella if he had any interest in those vacant positions. Canadian television reported Wednesday that San Jose has asked for permission to speak to Tortorella about replacing Ron Wilson, and positions also are open in Atlanta and Colorado. Because Tortorella has one year remaining on his contact, interested teams must contact the Lightning seeking permission to speak to Tortorella. But since Tampa Bay would be off the hook for his $1.3 million salary for next season should he find another coaching position, the Lightning won't stand in the way if other teams call.

Could be an upcoming position in Pittsburgh too before much longer.

Yeah, I could see him waiting to make a decision until after things get figured out in Pittsburgh. What a good time to be an available, Stanley Cup winning coach though, holy geez.

This guy can step into a team that has all the tools already in place - he doesn't even have to go through a re-building phase at all, really. Between the Sens (who need work, don't get me wrong, but still not a bad place to land), the Pens (maybe), the Sharks and to a lesser degree the Avs, this guy basically has his pick of where he thinks he has his best chance to win. Good deal for Torts.

Thinking about it out of nowhere, I find myself somewhat surprised that Calgary didn't get rid of Keenan yet - I guess his friendship with Sutter is keeping him alive there...

June 6, 2008  09:06 AM ET

last time I checked, the Avs had Granato as their head coach?

June 6, 2008  09:41 AM ET

oh yeah! completely forgot about that, thanks for the correction, Dashiva. I was likely a little, how you say, "lifted" when I heard that news, and it was so ridiculous I just believed it to have been an hallucination!

June 6, 2008  09:58 AM ET

They need a team in Milwaukee so that Fonzie can go back to his roots (LOL). Baun-ded has a good point. If the Pens fire their coach, Torts can walk right into a tailor-made Stanley Cup-winning situation, a la Scotty Bowman (in every job where he's ever won in).

June 6, 2008  10:23 AM ET

I would be dismayed to see him surface in Pitt. I think he should go to San Jose.

June 6, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Not really, no. That truth hurts very little, considering the Wings have 3 Cups for his efforts, and he was a big part of this 4th one. I'll take a coach who can get a team over the top ahead of a coach who can't get the job done (Ron Wilson, for example) any day of the week. Really, if we are being honest, Babcock did the same thing when he stepped in after Dave Lewis' firing as well. Nothing wrong with it, in my eyes. Some coaches are able to do what it takes to win, and some aren't.

June 6, 2008  10:52 AM ET

And I'm sure Scotty doesn't mind what you have to say, what with his ELEVEN Stanley Cup Championships and all

June 6, 2008  10:52 AM ET

he's going to have to walk around with his fly open so he has somewhere to put this one!

June 6, 2008  12:08 PM ET

... this guy is an amazing teaching coach, has high expectations of his players, delivers exactly as he promises, has a great family, and has been successful in all his coaching forays. I can't see why anyone wouldn't want him.

If you want a nice guy, look for a priest... this guy is a really good coach. Congrats to whoever picks him up.

June 6, 2008  12:49 PM ET

That's a silly remark boston..re Scotty's losses.
Think about it.

Do you know the way to San Jose?
I've been away so long
I may go wrong and lose my way
Do you know the way to San Jose
I'm going back to find some piece of mind San Jose -a
L. A. is a great big freeway
Put a hundred down a by a car
In a week - or maybe two - they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years and quickly pass
And all the stars there never were a parkin' cars and pumpin' gas
I've got lots of friends in San Jose
Wo oh oh oh
Can't wait to get back to San Jose
Wo oh oh oh
Do You know the way to San Jose?

June 6, 2008  02:17 PM ET

all star teams, Baun? Perhaps, but coaching goes a long way towards winning. The Pens have 4 all-world players in their lineup in Crosby, Malkin, Gonchar and Hossa, and THEY just got beat. The Sens last year had Alfie, Spezza, Heatley and Redden, among others, and THEY lost as well. Systems can make all-stars - no knock on a heck of a player, but do you think Scott Stevens would be in the Hall without the Trap and the 3 Cups the Devils got with it? just an example...

June 6, 2008  02:25 PM ET

Baun-ded...we already see what is going on in Pitt with a hard-nosed coach. If Tort goes there he better take a lot of kleenex and pacifiers for the Huggies Pull-up Gang....

June 6, 2008  04:02 PM ET

Stevens deserves HOF simply for his hit on Lindros. And his hit on one of those "K" Russians (Kozlov, Kovalev, etc??) where he skated in front of the Wings bench and said "You're next" to whoever dared to look him in the eye was extra special as well.

June 6, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Penguins will have an opening soon.

What are you saying GoCan with that Ron Wilson comment? That he won't be able to bring the cup to Toronto????
I'm shocked LOL
