Jackson skeptical of Pierce injury

Lakers' coach Phil Jackson continues to be amused by Paul Pierce's quick recovery from a knee injury in Game 1, wondering if Oral Roberts had a hand it in. That doesn't sit well with Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett.

Here's my explanation for it since I, in no way, believe an NBA player would fake an injury in one of the biggest games of his career. Pierce probably got hurt and is one of those guys that is a quick healer. Ya know, the injury kills at first and then rapidly gets better. Then they put on that sleeve and probably gave him a shot of a painkiller. I don't know...

it quite obvious, Paul wants to be immortalized in Finals history

Why not just tell the truth--"the injury was not as bad as we originally thought, by carrying him off the court, we were trying to err on the side of caution."

June 7, 2008  09:53 AM ET

We're all skeptical if Phil can coach a winning team without superstars.

Don't blame Jackson. I think it was one of the worst fakes in the history of sports. Of course, he accomplished his goal and that was to create as much drama as possible. I've played contact sports my whole life and I've never seen anyone who had to be carried and/or carted off the field come back that season, let alone the same game. It was a great acting job.

Dude is right that the injury was not as serious as first believed, and they wanted to be cautious. Remember, Pierce is that dude who was stabbed back in 2001 during the season, and did not miss any significant time at all to return to playing action. So Paul Pierce is a gamer. Hence, the nickname, The Truth. Let's see how amused Phil Jackson MAY be when the ghost of Auerbach keeps Jackson from tying him for the most NBA titles won by a coach. The Celtics had Red Auerbach, not Oral Roberts in the locker room. Get it straight Phil.

The Academy Award goes to...Paul Pierce!

he is a flopper so of course he faked the injury thank goodness next season no more flopping!

June 7, 2008  10:31 AM ET

What are all you idiots talking about? So if the same thing happened to Kobe in LA would all you JFK/grassy knoll "conspiracy theorists" say that King Kobe faked the injury? Why not just give him some props for gutting it out and helping his team. The Zen master needs to worry more about his own's teams performance and less on Paul Pierce's injury

June 7, 2008  10:34 AM ET

I think they just shot him up and reminded him how important the game was. No doubt the situation will mark his place in the lexicon of Celtic lore. He still came up like a man possesed and made the shots.

June 7, 2008  10:34 AM ET

He probably got some tips from crybaby Ainge!! Don't you just love to hate the Celtics?

If a 90 second injury becomes lore, it just shows how far Celtic basketball has fallen.... What's next? Lauding Kevin Garnett for playing through a nasty blister?

June 7, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Anyone that's played ANY sport knows that when you get an injury- it HURTS
especially if you land awkwardly.........
First instinct is to 'freak-out'
- if it is more of a 'stinger' you get over it.....
That's what pierce did.....period

He's not a 'faker', he's not willis reed......
he got hurt, but wasn't that bad, so he came back.

If it would have happened to Kobe instead of Pierce, it would be the biggest news story and called a "miracle recovery" if not an act of the higher power.

The Academy Award for Spin Doctoring goes to the favorite and runaway winner...Phil Jackson!

That's just it. Kobe would never need carried off or put in a wheelchair unless it was something extremely serious. Don't forget that he is playing through a ligament injury right now. Maybe Phil shouldn't have made the comment but it was a little skeptical to say the least.

He was simply making an observation that was in the back of the mind of almost every basketball fan.
