Dukes' HR act ticks off umpire

Did Elijah Dukes show a little too much emotion upon hitting Ryan Franklin's 2-2 pitch over the center-field fence Thursday night at Nationals Park? Plate umpire Doug Eddings apparently thought so and wasn't happy that Dukes turned and thumped his chest after hitting the ball several pitches after showing frustration with a borderline strike call. Dukes also appeared to gesture toward Eddings just before he crossed the plate after rounding the bases. Nationals manager Manny Acta said word got back to him Eddings wasn't pleased.

This Nationals team is gangsta gee. Yeah boy!

June 7, 2008  10:18 AM ET

That was ridiculous. Nats are no place to do that especially when they get crushed in the game. Just shows why they are consistentlyin last place.

That was ridiculous... Nats are in no position to be acting a fool like that especially when they got crushed in the game. Just shows why they are consistently in last place.

Dumb dumb dumb. You better get used to borderline pitches being called strikes. Show up the other team: classless. Show up an umpire: Dumb.

June 7, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Dukes will be playing for Long Island or Newark in another year of two.

June 7, 2008  11:20 AM ET

stupid move, no class act at all, but then again look who the Nationals have for a GM. Jim (leather Pants) Bowen. It starts at the top. Borderline pitches mean just that, they are so close they can go either way. I bet ya Dukes had better be hacking at anything close anytime he at plate for the rest of this series and everytime Eddings is behide the plate, he'll get no borderline pitches called balls from this umpiring crew and this type of thing gets around and Umps stick together. Also, I wouldn't be suprised to see dusting off the seat of his pants from picking himself off the ground today. Low Class Bush league Act.

I guess you have to find your jollies wherever the f** you can in Washington....

June 7, 2008  12:15 PM ET

Dukes, when are you going to learn? But you know, many of us, including me, sometimes forget these players are just young boys, and some are more mature than others.

June 7, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Classic case of not acting like you've been there before.
I don't think it's that Dukes is immature, but rather just not a very good person. But Howie's right....when you're not a very good person and hitting .208, you're not going to be in the League for very long.

How do they spell PAYBACK in Washington?

How do they spell PAYBACK in Washington?...

" Dick Cheney"

June 7, 2008  01:45 PM ET

OK, this is a NEW one for me...
For the record, it was a WALK-OFF shot (in the 2nd game of a doubleheader) Dukes hit. Oh, and it was his 1ST in a Nats uniform.
YES, the Nats stink to high heaven; even I'VE said it here. It still does not give ANY of you the right to denigrate this organization. Have I gone after anybody ELSE'S team(s) on here?? NO, I have NOT!!!
Besides, we're not the WORST in the league. Near the bottom, YES. But the absolute worst?? DON'T think so.
Now c'mon, you didn't think I wouldn't notice this little story, DID YOU???

June 7, 2008  01:52 PM ET

ooooooooooooooooooooooo an umpire isnt pleased. oooooooo

June 7, 2008  02:33 PM ET

call better balss and strikes...not to mention why does a probably 50-60 year old man care what a MLB player does?

DC, I don't think we need the right. We're here to share our thoughts. Oh, and I don't think your in a position to go after anyone elses team.

June 7, 2008  08:06 PM ET

Bush league Bush league. But what do you want from a Bush leaguer.

June 7, 2008  09:47 PM ET

No coincidence that Tampa Bay Rays got good after getting rid of Dukes and Delmon Young. Bad Apples.
