Bronco's injury creates concern

Before fretting over the condition of Tony Scheffler, it might help to identify exactly who he is. An H-back? A hybrid (receiver and tight end)? A receiving tight end? "It seems like they put a new label on it every year," Scheffler said. Whatever the position is called, Scheffler is one the league's best. It's a group that includes Dallas Clark, Chris Cooley, perhaps Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jason Witten, maybe even Antonio Gates. Which is why his foot injury should be every bit as worrisome as Brandon Marshall's gashed right forearm. What makes Scheffler's injury more disconcerting is the perception of regression. He broke his left foot while running a pass pattern May 21, 2007. On May 19, 2008, while running another pass pattern, Scheffler felt a pop in the same left foot, in the same fifth metatarsal. Even if it wasn't fractured this time, it didn't exactly have the feeling of progress.

Comparing this guy to Clark, Cooley or Witten? I'd say that's a stretch.

June 7, 2008  09:56 AM ET

I'll say, I've never even heard of him.

June 7, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Tony Scheffler must be the best-kept secret in the NFL.

June 7, 2008  10:37 AM ET

This guy sucks

June 7, 2008  10:40 AM ET

I hesitate to put him in a list that includes Dallas Clark and Jason Witten. No doubt he could help take some of the pressure off of Jay Cutler. I think a good TE is key for a youn QB's development.

June 7, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I think he means Desmond Clark, Bears, 44 catches, 545 yds. Now that is comparable. The kid is a solid receiver, but not a top ten TE. Might be some day, who knows..

June 7, 2008  01:10 PM ET

For a big guy Tony Scheffler might be the best receiving tight end of all the ones mentioned above by the article and salvage 50 "You Don't Know Jack****" if you did you wouldn't have said what you did!

June 7, 2008  01:27 PM ET

"ALL ABOUT ME"... The hard facts are this. Scheffler was 11th in yards gained receiving as a TE. Glad you like him, but he is not in the class of the TEs mentioned in the article. You would only find such comparisons in a Denver paper.. Here are the players he compares to.

Obviously the first number is the GP. followed by catches, and total yards.
He is a Desmond Clark Clone. Nothing wrong with that, though you do hope a second round pic improves over time.

June 7, 2008  01:44 PM ET

He must have the same trainer as Nomar Garciaparra.

June 7, 2008  02:12 PM ET

Or Nomar is his trainer

June 7, 2008  02:23 PM ET

Sports Illustrated is insane...

First of all the only people who he is really "like" are Cooley and Clark. At this point in his career, he shouldnt even be in the same sentence as them. He couldnt hold their jock strap.

Witten and Gates are the best in the league, and complete players. Most people dont even know who this guy is.

June 7, 2008  03:47 PM ET

'maybe even Antonio Gates'? Gates is the premier H-back. He's the template for the position. Who is this guy? (Klis, not Scheffler.)

June 7, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Oh, yeah. He's a Broncos fan. He'd twist his own arm before he ever said anything truly positive about a Charger.

It isn't SI. This story comes out of the Denver Post.

June 7, 2008  04:58 PM ET

Sheffler is a productive player that just about any organization would like to have. It is concerning that he's hurt because he's quickly become one of Cutler's favorite targets (along with Marshall). That being said... he's not quite at the level of Gates, Clarke or Witten. Good player though... Hopefully he gets healthy soon.

June 7, 2008  07:12 PM ET

First off, SafetyBlitz, Mike Klis isn't a Broncos fan, he's a sportswriter for the Denver Post. Second, the reason that Tony Scheffler isn't very well-known yet is because Shanny tried to use Daniel Graham too much last season, a blocking tight end. Tony Scheffler is exactly in the mold of Jason Witten, and when he is used to his full potential, he will be one of the best in the league. Watch out for him if he isn't hurt this season. With B-Marsh being injured, Scheffler will be asked to shoulder a lot of the load to help out Marshall and Cutler. He could easily be a Pro Bowler this year.

June 7, 2008  07:33 PM ET

broncos will be at best 6 and 10...go raiders

June 7, 2008  07:48 PM ET

hmanz, Broncos will be better than the raiders at least and will go 10-6 grabbing the wildcard from the AFC West...

June 7, 2008  10:11 PM ET

I won't say he's the second coming of Sharpe or that he is Gates, Cooley, Witten, Clarke all rolled into one, but I will say this: Don't sleep on Scheffler if he's healthy.
He has great hands (See Chargers game '06 and last years Bears game) but he is just potential so far. Just like the Post overstated the current comparisons to Gates, etc. some of you guys are understating his talent by comparing him to Desmond Clark etc. Keep in mind Schef accomplished what he did really only playing 12 games (the first 4 he did play a few snaps but his foot injury was too severe to get significant time) and this was also his first full season (he really only played 6 games his rookie year).....but for now he is just potential. It's true, for Cutler to succeed he needs a healthy Scheffler and Marshall. But no one can compare him to the elite TE's in the league yet. But he does have the talent
