San Diegan Phil Mickelson says he is relishing his chance to play in a threesome with Tiger Woods in the first two rounds of the U.S. Open next week at Torrey Pines. "I think it's awesome," Mickelson said in an interview yesterday with The Union-Tribune. "I wish the (PGA) tour had the (guts) to do it more." The gallery following the group, which also includes world No. 3 Adam Scott, is expected to be large and boisterous, with the top-two ranked players in the world squaring off on a South Course that is considered home turf for both Southern California natives. Mickelson doesn't think the crowd or the media throng that will follow them will be a problem.

Mickelson will play with him all 4 rounds !!! providing tiger keeps up with him

Tiger will eat Phil's lunch if he is even close to healthy. Phil will never get to Tiger's level. Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time and Phil is just one of the next best of this generation.

Watch phil choke on thursday instead of sunday.Phil is the 2nd best easily with what 34 wins. But it's big gap between 1 and 2.

No complaints here! Kicking off summer break with some excellent golf and the best golfers doing it! If you love the game, this is the game you wait to see. That and the wheels coming off for John Daly.

have you ever tried to play?

Why is the word 'guts' in parantheses in this story? "...I wish the (PGA) tour had the (guts)...."

June 8, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Granted that Phil will never be as good or win as many majors as tiger, but since he won he his 1st major he has looked more comfortable at the majors, and i think hes not that far behind tiger, youve got to remember there are 150 odd players, its not all about the big 2, Immelman spring to mind, or even campbell who quallified from walton heath before going on to beat tiger at pinehurst !

He thinks it's "awesome"? Does he also hope to shoot a "69, dude". Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
