Paterno won't name starting QB

When it comes to Penn State's starting quarterback, Joe Paterno refuses to gaze into the crystal ball. For one, the Nittany Lions coach insists he hasn't made a decision who that person might be. And two, he avoids the topic like his own retirement for fear that his words will be read as favoring one candidate over the other. Daryll Clark and Pat Devlin are the candidates, even though Paterno likes to toss fifth-year senior Paul Cianciolo into the mix. Last month, the 81-year-old coach hinted that Clark was the leader in the clubhouse, but yesterday at a Nittany Lion Club fund-raiser, Paterno said there's still time for each to jockey to the front. "Each one of them can enhance their chances," Paterno said. "We've talked to each one about what they have to do better. One's got this problem, one's got that problem, another one's got this problem, but they all can overcome them." Asked what those problems might be, Paterno didn't bite. Asked if there were any similarities between Clark and former quarterback Michael Robinson, Paterno quipped, "They're both African Americans."

Joe just can't remember who the starting QB is

June 8, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Joe favors the senior player over the better player, Clark will be the primary.

PS Forever

At this stage of his life, Joe favors everything senior - including the "early bird" discount at IHOP. (I think he's beginning to lose it and that is sad because he's a great man.)

How many other coaches in a similar position would hesitate to name a starter? Probably all of them! So let Joe decline to name a starter three months before the season and here comes the age discrimination crowd pretending to have a clue. How many coaches have led teams to two national titles? How many have donated so much time and money and talent to academic pursuits at their schools? Need I go on? I didn't think so! Go JoePa!!

This in my opinion (QB position) has been the glaring weakness for Penn State for a few years now every since Robinson graduated. They really have to find a good solid QB to lift them out of the rut they have been in. Got to hand it to Joe Pa, in his later years has become a real celebrity, good for him! What ever anyone thinks, Joe Pa has been a class act for a long time. like the old saying goes: you never know what ya got until it leaves!

At least he called them african americans!

I am all for Pat Devlin.... he is a PA boy who owns a lot of the PA passing records.. and he has something that most QBs that Penn State have not had recently..cough cough Morelli... and that is TOUCH.. he throws a pretty ball.. and it's deadly accurate.. he is not a gun slinger.. and the kid can run too.. So i think we'll have a two QB system.. Devlin passes.. Clark is in there for run plays

Does it really matter? There are a few teams named Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois? Am I forgetting anyone? We can't beat these guys no matter who we have at QB. Come on, we have a severe lack of depth and athleticism that these schools never seem to have. Is hoping for 9-3 anything to be proud of? Yes, I'm a PSU alum, not a hater, just a realist.

"...and if I'm not back at the home by nine they declare me legally dead and collect my insurance!!!", said the befuddled coach.

In other news JoPa refused to name what type of adult diaper he preferred, cloth or disposable. Paterno said there's still time for each to jockey to the front. "Each one of them can decrease my chances, of soiling myself" Paterno said. "I've looked at each one to see what they have to do better. One's got this problem, one's got that problem, another one's got this problem, but they all can be a little bit better."

early on set alzheimers.

I think we're all well-aware that Joe Paterno hasn't been coaching this team for a while. I mean, the guy doesn't even wear a headset. He keeps his hands in his pockets the whole time, no clipboard, nothing. The only reason this guy is still coaching is because Bobby Bowden is still coaching. They won't retire because they want to be on top.

June 9, 2008  10:59 AM ET

I m surprised that he remembered the names or anything about the players they were talking about.

Good one LF

hahahahaha

June 9, 2008  12:41 PM ET

I would think that Joe goes with Clark. He did play in the bowl game against A&M last year.

June 9, 2008  12:42 PM ET

At least Joe did say African-Americans. He is old enough. He could have said **** or something.

I'm not offended, JoePa. You said the correct thing.

June 9, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Oh I didn't say the N-word, FanNation. I said the clean word for the N-Word and you still edit me. Damn, CensorNation is back in full effect.

June 9, 2008  07:44 PM ET

They beat Wisconsin last year, Mike.

June 9, 2008  10:30 PM ET

No efs 120, Wisconsin lost. We haven't "beaten" anyone in years.
