Will Bears replace busted Benson?

Why was Cedric Benson, the face of NFL draft busts in Chicago, grinning widely in a booking photo taken early Saturday morning after Austin police arrested him and charged him with drunken driving in a busy night life district? Benson hasn't looked that happy since the Bears traded Thomas Jones. If Jerry Angelo follows the emotions that were on his sleeve Saturday, the Bears will soon need another running back. Second-round pick Matt Forte looks good in shorts and a helmet, but it will take more than a promising rookie to rev up the Bears' running game. Veteran Shaun Alexander remains unsigned, but agent Jim Steiner told the Tribune on Saturday the Bears haven't called. Available retreads such as Mike Anderson and LaMont Jordan might be worth a phone call. The most intriguing possibility could be former Lions running back Kevin Jones, who is coming off ACL surgery and will audition for interested teams June 28. The Benson-less Bears should be one of those teams. Even Lovie Smith, a Benson backer, sounded as if his patience was wearing thin when asked if players had begun to take advantage of his instinct to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Running backs who average 3.4 yds. a carry really are not that hard to find. The countdown has begun.

June 8, 2008  10:26 AM ET

At least he LOOKS happy.

June 8, 2008  10:37 AM ET

There goes his credibility regarding the first incident. Conspiracy theorists will argue that he was "targeted"

June 8, 2008  10:54 AM ET

No they should keep him and give him more money (kidding).

June 8, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Wasn't he wearing the same shirt in his last mugshot?

June 8, 2008  10:57 AM ET

The Bears are in the weeds now.The entire backfield is a mess.

June 8, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Big horns fan here. But Benson's performance for the Bears did not earn him any mulligans. I don't know what the cap hit will be, but if I were them I'd move on. Cedric needs to grow the f up.

"Set him up again"? How about he's just plain stupid to put himself in this position. If you think people are trying to set you up, you play into their hands? There's no arguing with a breathalyzer, my friend: drunk is drunk and Benson is stupid. And he's gone. This isn't speeding through a deserted construction zone on the Edens in the wee hours, this is seriously stupid.
Pack you bags and your Cuervo or Grey Goose or whatever it is that gets you so messed up. There's no defending you now pal: this is the third strike. You are just plain dumb. AND you can't run.

Hope so.............

The Bears should finally start playing Adrian Peterson. All that guy does is gain yards when he's in the game, but it's clear the management there doesn't like him. He's been third-string behind some horribly underachieving players over the years.

Yes indeed. I think I'd call Alexander and try him out. At least he might do something and be able to coach Forte some. This does not look good for a team that is beset with problems and problem-players doing stupid things. And I don't think Lovie is the one to lead the team out of the wilderness.

June 8, 2008  11:57 AM ET

They will not release him....yet.until they get al the information they need

Grossedout9 |

Oh, you mean tomorrow instead of today? This guy has now established a pattern of behavior that looks like it's only going to get worse. Even if you eliminate the Edens incident, the other two amount to a serious drinking problem for the guy. (Could that have affected him last year?) You got a guy dependent on drugs or alcohol, you don't have a player giving 100% the way you need. The Bears could tell him to go to rehab, but it looks to me like Benson would just earn a fourth strike anyway.

I was in Benson's corner on the boating while intoxicated deal, but man I cannot see how the hell he can claim anything but stupid on this one. His lawyer says Benson didn't think he was drunk. So take the brerathalyzer, Delbert, and prove it before they haul your dumb butt to jail. In Texas, you fail the field sobriety test and refuse the breath test or a blood test, you are as good as cooked and you are arrested. As far as the court is concenred you are drunk and if you were stopped while driving, you are DWI. Pretty much zero tolerance here. If he is convicted on the boating charge and convicted on this charge, he would be looking at suspended license, 200 hours community service, deep lung device installed on his vehicle, and up to a year in jail. A third conviction would be a felony with up to 10 years in prison. What an idiot!
